What are the most played roleplaying systems anymore?

Hmmm... maybe see what was registered for a recent con? See who played what. I think that, other than some poll or survey, would be your best bet for solid numbers.

I go to some cons where no one runs D&D because they play D&D at home and want a change. WHen someone actually puts a D&D table up they fill up massively and quick. Play at cons does not equal play overall.

The last time I saw info on this from a magazine that surveyed distributor numbers it was WOTC/D&D, White Wolf, then my memory gets hazy. I think Paladium was 4th or 5th. Castles and Crusades was around 8th. I think Green Ronin was in there. These were Publishers, not product lines, so I don't know if Green Ronin was on the list due to M&M or True20, or due to both having strong sales. Same goes for White Wolf, etc...

Estimated list from "Best Sellers at Amazon.com" top 100.

Based on the data I’ve had for other products, I would note that there can be quite a difference between best selling and most played. Because not every game bought gets an equal amount of play.

I’ve got no idea. I might guess D&D, Storyteller/ing, GURPS standing out above the crowd. Then again, I’ve heard that Palladium has an extremely strong under-the-radar (or at least under-my-radar) following.

I’d love to see a well-done survey.

If I recall correctly, Amazon sales rankings are more about short-term sales than longer-term trends. That'd make them a poor indicator of what's being played.

I would assume that 4e and 3e are the top games around. History and anecdotal evidence would lead me to guess that White Wolf stuff takes up the next few slots.

According to http://www.clemslansing.com/wordpress/?cat=13, the best-sellers in July were:

1. D&D 4th Ed Players Handbook
2. D&D 4th Ed H2: Thunderspire Labyrinth
3. 40K RPG: Dark Heresy
4. Classic Battletech Technical Readout
5. Pathfinder #10
6. D&D 4th Ed Monster Manual
7. D&D 4th Ed Dungeon Masters Guide
8. D&D 4th Ed H1 Keep on the Shadowfell
9. Pathfinder #11
10. World of Darkness: Dogs of War

Of course, this was when D&D 4e came out, so some of the titles above are no big surprise...haven't time to try and find if they have stats for Aug, Sep, etc. It's Sunday, and I'm off to gaming! :)

For the record, I'm playing Savage Worlds today :)

I also know that in the monthly edition of Previews they have the bestsellers for the previous month (comics, toys, books and games/rpgs)...but I don't have the latest copy with me at the moment.

And yes, NOW I'm off to gaming! :P

Don't forget Shadowrun. While not in the same league as D&D, it should be among the better-selling games out there, I would think.

Please note, that is not, exactly, what I said.

I'll bet, though, that most game cons and game days run D&D events. I'll further bet that you'll likely get a more solid number than the guessing, and probably something resembling the truth.

I don't see any reason to assume that convention gaming is reflective of home gaming, to be honest. The vast majority of gamers don't go to conventions; trends there are no more representative than trends on sites like EN World.

I'd say that D&D4e, D&D3.5 and WoD: Vampire are the heavyweights.

The ivy league is made up of, in no particular order:

WH40kRP: Dark Heresy
Rifts
Shadowrun
GURPS
Star Wars Saga Edition
Runequest

and ...

Pathfinder. I'm not sure how this will keep up after the playtest is done and the book is released, but at the moment I think it gets quite a lot of play.

Although Call of Cthulhu is well regarded (and my favourite rpg), I don't think it is as widely played as it should be, and not as widely played as the games mentioned above.

I'm not sure how much play Traveller gets, but it could be quite a lot due to the novelty factor of the newish release.

I'd like to put Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay up there, but I think the dearth of new releases are hurting the actual play numbers.
