What are you planning for Halloween?

Be yourself

One trick I have used successfully over the past dozen or so Halloweens has been "avatar" games.
By that I mean useing whatever horror-type rules you know best (for me it's been Beyond the Supernatural and a little d20 Modern) and have the players create themselves as characters.
Then the adventure pretty much just flows from your actual gathering.
For example: we always played at one guys house, so the adventure started with the group hanging out, gaming.
Mix in a creepy knock on the door, random visits from the police, hang-up phone calls.
This all works best if you play in a dark, quiet, remote location this works even better. ;)
Limit the players to only the equipment they can actually find IRL. You'll be amazed at their ingenuity! Fireplace pokers, ball bats, etc.
Good opponents are always cultists looking to use the house for unspeakable acts, or capture virgins to sacrifice.
One final showdown with some unspeakable horror is always a nice way to cap the evening. Few things are more satisfying than watching a team of gamers beating down a shoggoth with golf clubs, or running over a werewolf with a pickup truck. :D

Bunch o' Halloween Marriages. Congrats, folks! :)

For my group, we usually run something in a Call of Cthulhu vein, with a little darker atmosphere than we usually do when running it. CoC is usually too depressing to our group to run for long stretches, so we relegate it to one-shots. We intend to do the same thing this year, and I usually run it, so I'm going to see if I can come up with something original.

Hmmm... I may have just the thing...

*SPOILER* FOR ANYONE IN MY REGULAR GAMING GROUP, TORM THIS MEANS YOU, DON'T LOOK...
Based on an idea that a previous poster at ENWorld had about two or three years ago, the players stat themselves up as BRP Call of Cthulhu characters, and then run them through a very bizarre situation filled with mutilation, death, and things that aren't quite human. Basically, start them with something like waking up, and each one is missing a body part or an organ that has been surgically removed from them just hours before, or something similar. This year, without one particular player at the table who is quite versed with the anarchist's cookbook, it should run pretty smoothly!

last year we did a one shot Ravenloft converted to d02.

I6 Ravenloft.

i almost quit D&D for good after playing. not b/c of the adventure. just my frustration at having to play d02 only for 3 frickin' years... now 4 frickin' years..

but at least i get to referee OD&D again... so all is well in the world again. :D

I generally forget to plan adventures around holiday themes, but once in awhile my memory kicks in and I run something humourous around April Fool's Day or something spooky around Hallowe'en. But this year, I honestly didn't even think of running a scary adventure for Hallowe'en until I saw this thread. :(

Maybe it's not too late. Hmm...

Did Jack Chick get to you

Nah. I just think it's overrated. Kids don't trick or treat in my area anymore and the ones that do are 16 and don't wear costumes.

Ooh, this is a great idea!

we also have another Tradition in Rochester NY (Where I no longer reside).
Groovy--that's where I currently reside. (No, no...I'm not a complete freak.) I graduated from Wilson Magnet HS & I attended RIT for a few years.

I don't know if a 3rd wheel would be appropriate, but I'm a HUUUUUUUUGE CoC fan and would love to tag along for a game or two.

I'll be doing what I am doing every weekend night until the 31st... helping run a haunted house. This may be sick, but there is just something truly enjoyable about watching a grown man get so scared he throws his significant other at you and runs in fear!

No gaming here :( well there never has been in the past anyway. I'd love to run a kick ass Vampire or Witchcraft game this year though. In the nearby woods. Never going to happen, it may get written though.

I will be giving out loads of penny sweets to any kids that show up though. I bloody love seeing their faces light up when I try to double what they have already :) either that or watch them sag when I tell them you can only have as much as you can fit in one hand then show them a bag of massive gob-stoppers ;)

Watching the Red Sox in game seven of the WS. What could be more terrifying?

Good man, and on November first I will be calling in sick to work because I will spend the night drinking one way or the other.
