What are you reading in 2024?

I love the immensely evocative setting, and wish the movies had hewn closer to it.

With each peal the bulb’s light was becoming more revelatory. By it, he saw the east wall flayed; saw the brick momentarily lose solidity and blow away; saw, in that same instant, the place beyond the room from which the bell’s din was issuing. A world of birds was it? Vast black birds caught in perpetual tempest? That was all the sense he could make of the province from which—even now—the hierophants were coming—that it was in confusion, and full of brittle, broken things that rose and fell and filled the dark air with their fright.
Alas, that sort of heightened language simply does not convey to film. Also alas, it's fallen severely out of fashion.

The Hellbound Heart, by Clive Barker. The book Hellraiser was based on. An energetic, lurid short horror novel well worth the read for any fan of the movie or genre.
It's been about 30 years since I last read The Hellbound Heart. So good.

If there's ever going to be a successful reboot of Hellraiser, I think they'll have to go closer to the book. Trying to re-boot Pinhead unfortunately just isn't working.

Finished Book Two and am now starting Book Three in the trilogy by Dennis Schmidt: Twilight of the Gods III: Three Trumps Sounding. It started out as Norse fantasy, got a little druidic magic sprinkled in there, and then added some Egyptian and Chinese mythological figures in there as well in the first two books. I'm eager to see where this all ends up.

I've lost the ability to enjoy reading books. I stop because I'm bored or I fall asleep. I've tried new authors, but nothing grabs my attention. This has happened before. Currently, I only read RPG and wargame books.

At the end of the year I like seeing stuff like this. I know I'm not top of the charts around here, but at least I'm reading more than most. That's something at least.
