What are you reading (Mar '08)?

Starman

Adventurer
I haven't had time for any personal reading (I want to get to The Warrior Prophet, darn it!), but I've been reading some stuff for school.

Arabian Nights and Days by Naguib Mahfouz. This was inspired by One Thousand and One Nights and imagines what happens after Scheherezade is done telling her tales. I very much enjoyed it. The format is similar to OTON and the interlocking stories are very evocative.

I am just starting Season of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih. I'm just a few pages in, yet, so I haven't really formed an opinion, but so far I do like it.

I finished City of the Beast by Michael Moorcock last night. A quick, fun romp. Planet Stories has really delivered so far.

Up next is either Elantris by Brandon Sanderson or Hawkmoon by Moorcock.

I recently picked up The Wheel of Time again, and am about 1/3 through The Great Hunt at the moment.

Just finished Shaman's Crossing, the first book in Robin Hobb's Soldier Son trilogy. It was pretty good, but it made me think about how many fantasy novels use the "story of a boy with hidden/special talents who saves the world" plot (see WoT above).

I have Jack Vance's Lyonesse trilogy on my list for a reread sometime in the near future, as well.

Plus Sanderson's The Well of Ascension should be coming through at the library pretty soon; last I checked there was just one hold above mine.

Just finished Michael Chabon's Gentlemen of the Road - A Tale of Adventure this weekend. It has a pulp-fiction feel to it, similar to Solomon Kane, as its historically set in 11th century Khazikstan. He also writes in a very similar manner to Edgar Rice Burroughs, with run-on sentances and high-falootin works.

I'm waiting on Amazon to get Northwest of Earth by C.L.Moore, which I've had on pre-order since last month. I wish my local Barnes & Nobles carried some of the of Planet Stories inprint from Paizo. I'll probably spend the time waiting for the Moore book by finishing up The Warlords of Mars, which has been sitting untouched since last fall.

Added: just picked up Death of a Demon Lord during the GM March Sale for $1! I'm already on chapter 3 and I'll probably get the second book before the sale ends.

This last weekend I read Twilight by Stephanie Meyer. Not bad, but I am obviously not the target audience. Still, my niece (age 12) should enjoy it immensely. :)

After that I read The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, Vol. 1 - The Pox Party. This one I really enjoyed! Starts very strange and rather amusing and then drifts into deeper and more serious topics.

I'm still trying to get through Sanderson's Mistborn. I've also started the latest Wildcards shortstory collection. Can't get me enough of those Wildcards!

I was reading Runes of the Earth by Donaldson, but I just could not get through it. Either I've changed a lot since I last read Donaldson some twenty years ago, or he's lost all his magic.
