What are your favorite pre-3e D&D/AD&D books.

I would say:

Unearthed Arcana (I recall being particularly fond of the Cavalier)

Oriental Adventures

Deities & Demigods

And for modules, my overall favorite would be Tomb of Horrors. I still remember fondly, twenty years later, after my Paladin was killed by the Demilich, asking "What do you mean I don't get a saving throw?"

For me....

It is Unearthed Arcana (to this day that is truly the book that changed the game)

For a campaign setting Out Of The Ashes... it was the first real Greyhawk expansion...

....For an adventure..... B4 The Lost City..... in my opinion the perfect dungeon crawl...

The first Ravenloft box set, Masque of the Red Death, Castles Forlorn, The Van Richten guides, Player's Option: Skills and Powers, Forgotten Realms box set (1st edition), Waterdeep and The North sourcebook, The Magister, 1983 Greyhawk Box Set.

Oh, yeah, and Drow of the Underdark. Wore the cover right off of that one reading through it.

Without doubt, the Four-Volume Faux-leather Magic Item Compendium that TSR released in 1995. Each Volume was $25.00, and I bought the entire set. It contains EVERY MAGIC ITEM ever published until that point by TSR - we're talking something like 10,000 items, which when you count all the random tables, permutations of items, etc. is something like ten million magic items.

It's one of the few D&D purchases I never regretted in any way, shape, or form. Still have 'em, still steal from 'em.

World Builder's Guide (still use it!)
Planescape (particularly the Planes of ... boxed sets and Dead Gods.)
DM Design Kit (cliche but often inspiring.)
Complete Villain's Handbook (this and the above will make you a better DM.)
Player's Option: Skills & Powers and Spells & Magic (Say what you like, these are the only thing that kept me from dropping D&D and moving onto other games.)

B7: The Palace of the Silver Princess - Just because this is the module I started all my players thru.
I also really liked UA and my favorite book to read which also gave me a new look on things was Dungeoneer's Survivial Guide. It really helped me to make dungeon crawling better. (and scarier) :D

The original Dark Sun Campaign Setting
The Planescape Campaign Setting
Oriental Adventures
Kara-Tur
Ruins of Undermountain
Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting (grey box)
Dead Gods
Menzoberranzan boxed set
Spellbound boxed set

1. Dungeons and Dragons Basic "Red" Boxed set - first thing I owned.

2. AD&D Module S4 Lost Caverns of Tsojcath - first AD&D adventure I ever went on

3. ADED 2e Tome of Magic - Let the Wild Mages roam free!

4. Castle Greyhawk. Best. Book. Ever.

Fiend Folio

City State of the Invincible Overlord and Wilderlands of High Fantasy

Some of the adventures published in the Dungeoneer and White Dwarf were pretty good, but I can't remember issue nos at this remove.
