What are your TTRPG Goals for 2025?

  • Wrap up my 5e Ravenloft campaign (which has really transformed more into a Darkon-set high-adventure campaign)
  • Run fewer games, play more games
  • Join some games run by great DMs to learn some more tricks of the trade as a lifelong DM
  • Launch a campaign set in my homebrew setting (corollary: pick a game to run it in first)

I'd like to rediscover the joy of gaming again. I'd like to put my creativity into games instead of running pre-designed adventures that follow a script. I'd like a "home base" of a system that I can be familiar enough with to let me not stress about learning mechanics and searching for the "next best thing."
I'd like to move away from multiple decks of cards, templates, minis, maps, and reliance on online tools. I'd like something simple and fun that lets my friends and me engage with characters, stories, and fun play.
Consider QuestWorlds for your home base.

PRO: It's simple, character focused, fast-playing, and designed to keep pushing the story forward. It needs only a d20, no maps, no minis. It's very easy to adapt to different settings or IPs. Its mechanics can, for all practical purposes, scale infinitely. You can resolve a conflict entirely in one roll, or stretch it our into a sequence of rolls, depending on how much you want to focus on it.

CON: It does lean more towards heroic characters, so if you're looking for gritty or realistic, that's not a strong point. If your players are heavily into tactical combat, character optimization, and system mastery, it doesn't support that at all. If "rulings not rules" sounds like a negative, you'll hate it. It can be hard to grok initially, especially if you're just reading the SRD. But once you see the numerous examples in the book, it becomes more clear how to run it, and once you've got it, you've got it.

My goal for 2025 is to get it to the table for at least a few sessions.

Get into a Shadowdark game. Get a copy of Rolemaster. "Finish" my homebrew document, the Micahnomicon. Get to a good plateau on building my homebrew world.

- Put my recently purchased Ironsworn: Sundered Isles material to use.

- Enjoy playing in a Pathfinder 2 campaign being run by another GM (I haven't spent much time out of the GM chair the past 3 years).

To find a local group that actually wants to play in the same room.
My last group ended up being just one other player, who upped and moved away 2 weeks ago.

It seems I'm old and out-of-date, so none of the tactics I'm used to doing to find a local gaming group work anymore. The local library is inundated with homeless who use it as a latrine, and there isn't a gaming store in 50 miles. Also, I'm too old to be hanging around community colleges without looking like some kind of creep.
And as I've been bitching for the last 10 years, the online experience depresses me more than helping.

It is a new year! Let's talk about out goals for 2025 as they relate to our TTRPG love, hobby and (if applicable) business/profession.

What do you have on deck for 2025?
I forgot to actually submit my list
  • Get one or more of ___ to table (so prep and then play):
    • Final Fantasy XIV TTRPG
    • Fallout 2d20
    • Alien
    • Either edition of Coriolis
    • Planet of the Apes
    • Pugmire/Monarchies of Mau/Squeaks in the Deep
  • Read:
    • FF XIV TTRPG
    • Airlords of the Han (This 100 year old novel has been teasing me for years - it's the sequel to Armageddon 2419 (aka, the Original Buck Rogers novel)
    • Coriolis: The Great Dark (the new edition
    • Planet of the Apes RPG
    • Squeaks in the Deep.
  • go to the local game cons in Corvallis.
  • Rebuild the Wed Group (Matt's Cavalcade of Comics, wednesdays in the evening.).
Changes since January...
  • have Read about half of FF XIV. Too much info to copy by hand, no PDF, and too expensive for the group most interested.
  • Replace FF XIV with Fabula Ultima
  • Not get COVID (one of my players caught it AGAIN.)
  • Not buy lots more dice
  • Made it to C3 Con. (Feb).
    • was a player in a Fabula Ultima game
    • Ran a CT adventure.
  • Got a new player. (Sadly, he is moving out of town in a few weeks.)
  • Read 2 of the 3 volumes of POTA. It's right up there with WEG Star Wars for good lore read in gaming books. 3rd isn't yet released to backers.
  • Read alpha of Coriolis
  • Prep for
    • Fabula Ultima – underway. Don't need the cheats as the guys already have it.
    • Fallout – underway.
    • Coriolis TGD underway but stalled from the alpha. I think I'll wait for the final before continuing
    • Final Fantasy XIV - canceled due to too much to do in a handout. with remote players. FTF, sure.
    • Squeaks not added to my Pugmire/MoM notes yet. The guys expressed negative interest in rodent PCs other than Mouse Guard.
My Eldest wants me to run a game based upon Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles... FF XIV won't help.
