Close.... '79 I Guess

I'm 47 and in 1977 it was the only game in town....

In fact, I owe my D&D addiction to two unconnected elements:

1) that 1e DMG looked awesome, complex, intriguing...

2) Was it in Delany's (an author I mostly hated) Dhalgren (a book I mostly disliked) or Triton (another book I liked not so much) that there was the short description of a strategic game on a 3D board where the wizard's score was calculated based on the angle of attack? The complexity piqued my curiosity.

Until then, I had not been a gamer of any sort, but the combination of both items doomed much of my free time from that point onwards.

Yea, the hot chicks.

Seriously though, the old SSI computer games. Pool of Radiance, Secret of the Silver Blades, Curse of the Azure Bonds, blah blah.

And, an old BASIC game played on my Heathkit Z-100 called "DND". Make a character, travel through a randomly generated dungeon, fighting single monsters, getting stuff and levels, and going through smoky grey gates to other parts. Seemed to have most of the classic monsters. Wonder if I still have the source...

Oh! Thirdly, one of the original Roguelikes - Moria.

Storytelling.

Before playing I was into comicbooks and wrote/drew my own. A friend of mine whom had just opened a comicbook store had some DnD in it.

He lent me a book (Dungoeneer's book 2nd) and told me to read it and sit in on a game. I decided to try it. I had only 1/2 my stats done when ghouls attacked. It wasn't even my turn yet and found myself changeing and attacking my teammates.

I was hooked then and never looked back.

Interactive storytelling. Gotta love it.

(Edit: Adding relevant stuff.)

Got into D&D as I went to a "Strategy and Tactics" summer program that was a military historyesque program that used Historical wargaming.

The teacher said "How many of you have played D&D?" I was the only hand not raised.
I bought the Mentzer red box that night...

mhacdebhandia's oddly out of context reply was in response to me being snarky to him. I apologize.
