What book to get?

If we are going to bring in other monster books MMIII doesn't stand a chance IMO. ..............the Kalamar one, ..............all those I goto before MMII, MMIII, or FF.

I quite like all three of the books that were initially mentioned. I haven't used Lords of Madness, but it looks like fun. MMIII I've used a bit IMCs, and despite its bad press, lacklustre quality and other real flaws, it's not that terrible really. Advanced Bestiary has not been used in the very short time I've had it so far, but there is certainly some great stuff in there, which I'm sure will see use in the near future. . . besides, you can't (often) go wrong with GR, IMO.

It might not be to every GM's tastes, but I've found Denizens of Avadnu (as well as several other books that've been mentioned in this thread) to be worth the price.


I gotta say, it sure is a mismatched selection to be choosing from (MMIII, AB & LoM). Didn't you also mention environmental books? Well, if so, I can honestly say that Frostburn has been very useful to me, in actual play. Stormwrack looks promising, and is somethiing I will no doubt end up purchasing when I get around to it. But you seriously don't need any of them unless you're planning on running those specific kinds of campaigns / sessions.

I have to agree. Dangerous Denizens is one of my all-time favourite monster books. A real gem.

I have the rare oppurtunity to buy a book today---I've narrowed it down to: Advanced Beastiary or Lords of Madness or Monster Manual III. (or maybe one of the enviromental books)
which would you recommend?

One thing to think about - are you a DM or a player or both? (to analytical about it anyway)

If your a DM then you need to look a what is "lacking" in your campaign (obvious or not, stated verbally by someone or not) and go with it. Or, to say it another way, what you want more of in your campaign.

What I can honesly say is that it is really hard to beat the DMGII with your lisings above - for a DM that is. It covers so much that has been developed since the fist 3 core books came out and things tnhey did not cover well or at all...very useful.

If you are a player I would say that you should perhaps look at what your character concepts tend to be and go with that or wait for newer books.
