What Books should I get??

I'm thinking of picking up D20 Modern and seein what it's like..

My problem is I love heavy gear but my gaming group refuses to play it since it's not (d20 Sigh!). I don't really blame them since most are "newer" gamers and they don't want to learn another system..

So I can buy the D20 Modern book, the d20 Future, and The Mecha Compendium fro mDP9.. Is that all I'll need or are their other "must have" products? As in must haves I mean incase I wish to try something else in the Scifi range other then HEavy gear/Jovian?.

BTW I have a bunch of DP9's Heavy Gear books for background and such..

Thanks in advance for help..

Second that on GT. It can run anything you do with D20 Modern better, plus it's well-suited to straight fantasy, post-apoc, pulp, and anything in between. Not sure how well it would do mecha since that's not a genre I much care for, though.

I'd also recommend looking at the d20 Future .PDFs Ronin Arts puts out. If they are half as good as the fantasy stuff, they're pretty damn good.

I love Grim Tales too. But for Heavy Gear (or related experience)? Naw. Not what it's for. GT is much more a Cthulhu or Conan thing.

Depending on how you like your powered armor -- if you want something a bit in the Iron Man or Knight Sabers end of the pool, you might consider picking up Blood & Circuits by RPGObjects.

RoninArts also has a few powered armor/mecha related entries.

Wow a lot of different responces..

I'd like to stick with the Mechs as extensions of the Man like Heavy gear does. I like battle tech too and played it in school almost every day, so those types of mechs where they are "Driven" by the pilot would work too..

BTW to add a bit Scifi Owns me, what I don't want is Fantasy Mechs where it's Elves, Castles, dragons and MECHA! Miltiary Mechs striding (battletech) or gliding (heavy gear/ Jovian) over the battle field with lasers, plasma, railguns in full glory is what I want

Such a shame Alternate Realities Publications doesn't produce any mecha-oriented books yet, otherwise I'd be able to send you a comp copy of something in PDF. Closest we come is a product line focusing on modern military vehicles.

From what you describe I suggest d20 Modern + d20 Future + Menace Manual (critters and NPCs for d20 modern). Grim Tales is really worth it, but more as an add-on given your emphasize on modern/future. I agree that GT seems more appropriate for Cthulhu/Conan stuff.

Do you have the Silhouette CORE RPG Rules Deluxe Edition? In the back there are conversion rules for SilCore (dp9/Heavy Gear system) to D20. It's only eight pages, so if i were you i would look in the store if it's interesting enough to buy.

The d20 Mecha Compendium Deluxe Edition has a whole section on Heavy Gear, including d20 Gear stat blocks. It also has Mecha design and combat rules pls some new prestige classes. It uses the d20 Mecha rules set made by Guardians of Order and expands it a bit. The d20 Mecha SRD is available here:
http://www.guardiansorder.com/games/d20/srd/
You'll also notice the d20 Anime SRD, also a very interesting read, it might fit better with a mecha campaign then the basic d20 rules set or the d20 modern rules set.

I would advise that you first take a look at the SRDs that WotC provide for basic d20 and d20 modern, and at the SRDs that GoO (link above) provide.

You could also try the Mecha mini game from one of the Dungeons (don't know which one).

Personally i don't really like the d20 Modern/Future rules set, i would go with the d0 Mecha rules from GoO and either use the d20 rules (needs some work to get classes right and needs some gun rules) or the d20 Anime rules. I'm hoping someone will make a SpyCraft Mecha expansion...
