So, I got to thinking about WotC's "assumed" structure for releasing campaign settings. I have always been a fan of limited run games (loved Changeling and Scion form WW and looking forward to Hunter.), and even argued that this was a viable business model for WotC. I also argued against the logic that numerous campaign settings inherently led to loss of money. Anyway, that is neither here nor there. What I'm wondering is which if any campaign settings do you intend to purchase the books for, if they come out for 4e, and why?

For me personally the one's I would purchase would be...

Dark Sun: The coolness factor, a harsh and gritty environment and a general dark feel make this one a winner (as long as they stay faithful to it).

Planescape: This was the setting that really opened my eyes to how much more, besides hack n' slash could be explored with D&D. The focus on beliefs and ideals, the alien landscapes and endless possibilities made it my favorite setting of all time.

Assuming they are done right, I would buy the setting books for Ravenloft and Greyhawk. However, if they do to either of these two setting what they are doing to Forgotten Realms then WotC will loose me as a customer.

Dark Sun gets a vote, as does Eberron. Really, I hope they break away from "Core" Dark Sun, though - if it's just a rewrite, I'd probably pass. New Dark Sun should:

1) cut down on the psionics, a bit.
2) have balanced races (obviously, for 4e)
3) Not follow established canon; I want more sorcerer kings, and less halfling rhul-thaun nonsense!

For me nothing is better, more rewarding or more authentic than using your own, homebrew setting.

Working on a new one for 4th (the old one is a decade old...time for a change). Starting small and going from their.

Been GMing D&D off an on since 1985 and have never run a published adventure or set my games in a published world...that's not to say I do not mine these resources for nuggets of creativity...just prefer doing the work myself.

I've read and collected a number of the ones listed in this poll though...all are pretty great.

Man, I'm such a setting-whore.

I'd pay money for 4E versions of Planescape, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, the FR and Eberron, in that order of preference. Indeed, I will probably pick up the FR in a month or so when it comes out.

I might end up throwing them across the room in a fit of nerd-rage, but I'd really like to see what they do with them. I think the current crop of designers are fairly smart and likely to sensibly reboot PS, DS and RL rather than trying for 4E on them whilst retaining their full history.

Book throwing (and non-buying if I learnt of it beforehand) would ensue with the follow settings under the following conditions:

Planescape - If there are no Factions in Sigil. I don't mind if they mess with the Factions a bit, but they're what Sigil is, to me.

Planescape - If the artwork is totally lame. DiTerlizzi did an incredibly job, and the other PS artists were often strong too, so they need someone who has a similarly otherworldly vibe, not someone like WAR or William O'Connor (no insult to either of them).

Dark Sun - If Psionics are not a core part of the setting it can gtfo. Wild talents can go, but Psions and Psychic Warriors and so on should be common and significant.

Dark Sun - If Defiling isn't still in.

Dark Sun - If more than 20% of the Sorcerer-Kings are dead.

Ravenloft - If I'm not REALLY SCARED by the whole deal, particularly the domain lords, and it'd better not be just by them being high level.

I voted other.
I love the 4E rules, but dislike the core setting. And i'm sure any other settings wotc produce will also be to my distaste. So i'm looking for a 3rd party setting.

Eberron, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, possibly Birthright (I missed it the first time around, but have been told it would probably appeal to me).

As long as they are quality products I will most likely be buying all of the setting books. I didn't do this for 3rd ed because of the number of books coming out for the setting, but with the new 2 books I can easily keep up (although I will skip the adventures).
