D&D 4E What chances are there for a 4e DARKSUN to be published?

Looking at the polls of game worlds, Darksun remains strong. So, at the pace of 1 a year, will Darksun be published 2010? 2011? Ever?

and if so, what age or should there be a third new age that takes the bit of good stuff from Age of Heroes and places it into the Original Boxed Set?

My money is on "never"

We know that FR is the 2008 setting and Eberron the 2009 one. That's 2/3 of the official 3e settings covered by 2009, leaving Greyhawk as the only official 3e setting not yet published in 4e. I'll estimate that WOTC will keep up something roughly like their 'one a year' projection for at least two or three years, giving a low-end estimate of 2 or 3 more settings. Greyhawk, as the most recognisable of old-school D&D settings will be a strong contender for inclusion in those 2 or 3, but Dark Sun--as probably the most popular non-supported-in-3e setting on ENworld and RPG.net* and as a good fit for PoL--would also be a very strong contender. If I were a betting man, I'd bet at somewhat worse than even odds that we'll have Dark Sun by 2012. I'd demand slightly better than even odds (maybe 3:2 or 2:1) for DS being the first setting after Eberron and I'd take evens on DS being the first or second after Eberron.

*Obviously, there are other contenders, particularly Planescape, but IMHO and in my very rough estimate based on reading forums, Dark Sun would take top spot.

Dark Sun makes sense if you include "Life Force" as a power source for Preservers/Defilers. Add in Sorcerer-Kings as a power source for Templars and Elements for the priests and you have 3 power sources to justify Dark Sun.

I'm a great fan of Dark Sun, but don't have a lot of faith when it comes to chances of it being published again. I do expect to get some support through DDI, and I believe that's the kind of thing that any fan of old settings should be expecting, but anything beyond that would be just a great bonus, nothing to wait for.

Fourth edition rules look like they can handle Dark Sun now, at least when it comes to non-spellcasters/non-psions. The difference between Preservers and Defilers, while maintaining balance, is at once a big part of the setting and basially impossible to do.

3e couldn't handle Dark Sun because it didn't deal well with lightly-armored fighter-type characters.

However, I doubt WotC would do it. The setting was messed up near the end, and I don't see any way to get past that.

It seems to me that the attitude of Wizards is to keep the number of published settings to a minimum.
They have announced that they are publishing one a year. That is hardly 'keeping published settings to a minimum'. Of course, we don't know how much support those setting will get -that is actually an interesting question which deserves its own thread.

I don't think DS for 4e is necessarily likely, but the chances are better than they were for 3e.

Yeah I meant epic destiny. :) Would be the kewlest. Its one of the cool things about darksun you at least know the number of epic level characters out there.

Anyhow, we would laso have starts for the Mul race, and Thri-keen. Plus a gladiator talent tree for the fighter (or heck, maybe even abase class). Also preservers and defilers can be handled easily, via talent trees or brand new classes. heck they oculd have been done in 3E using new classes or tweaking old ones. (see the Dragonlance Wizard class for 3E)

If Forgotten Realms is rebooted a hundred years into the future then Darksun can have a similiar reboot.

Here's to being hopeful.

It was moved forward in Dragon Magazine by a great period of time. They brought Dregoth into the open, but characters like Borys are still gone. The setting is missing cool villains (but at least the ones that exist are generally competent).

I don't think a talent tree would do it right. Defilers were supposed to be "overpowered" in 2e's Dark Sun, as players weren't supposed to play them, and that filtered into the rules. I'd love to see some balanced, flavor-appropriate talent trees, but that might be a contradiction.
