What character from a novel would you most want to play?

Not all that easy to decide, but perhaps Philip Marlowe, from the novels of Raymond Chandler.

He's smart, charismatic, wise, and sticks to his principles. He gets the girl too, more or less.

Drizzt, I'll admit it.

Pharaun from the War of the Spider Queen series would be fun too. Who wouldn't want to be the object of affection of an alu-fiend, a high priestess of Lolth, and a luscious battle-captive.

Hiro from Snow Crash and Ender from Ender's Game would be exciting.

Colbey, from The Renshai Chronicles and the Renshai Cycle books.

Has the ability to read minds, is the best swordsman to live, at various times was and is a pirate, general, teacher, adviser, Strategist, Wizard, God. First seen trying to kill himself by walking into every local army he can find. He won, of course. Challanged the world and everything in it, outhought the wisest and oldest, and saved the world at least 3 distinct times.

Ahem. Not that I'd want all that right away. His personality, however, is contagious.

Second choice... Lu-Tze from Discworld. Making the world a better place, one small turtle at a time.

Nearly any character from a Jack Vance book.

Cugel I would especially be able to play as the character deserve it.

Murgen's spawn in Lyonesse was cool also, in a different style. Of course, I would prefer Murgen himself, but that's just the powergamer in me.

Liked Melancthe's personality as well, in the same books.

I'll probably have other answers later, but the one's that spring to my mind right now are:

-Jessica Atriedes from Dune, strictly as an NPC of course

-Odysseus: not strictly from a novel, but that particular epic is pretty similar. I think good old adaptable, cunning, hedonistic, and weirdly conservatice Odysseus would be the ultimate role-playing challenge.

-Tyrion or Littlefinger would be nice except I don't know that I'd want to play characters I like that much.

To play as a PC I'd have to find a character that I intrigued me a great deal, had at least a bit of the cunning fool about him, but was lacking in some big way. To really play the character for a while I'd need room to play or tinker. Complete and great characters wouldn't be worth it.

Odysseus is great pick, though from the other direction, because he is such an expansive and mutable character that you can always add or subtract specific qualties from him. No single literary work could contain him, so why should I have to.

From Dune, I would actually prefer the Atreides Mentat or Jessica's daughter, the freeking infant who knew nigh everything before birth.
