What character generation method do you use?

What character stat generation method do you primarily use?

re

4d6 seven times drop lowest score, roll two characters, and you get 2 arbitrary points to spend where you like (maximum unmodified 18 score).

I have a very different view of stats compared to other people and generally like characters that are substantially better than I am in real life. I can't get that all too often with standard rolling methods or even 32 point buy. I use a very liberal rolling method that has caught on with our group.

Im a wierdo,

75 point buy, all stats start at 0. No abilitys lower then 8 or higher then 18 before racial modifiers.

keeps the characters balanced with each other.

We also used to use 4d6-L arrange to taste, until we had a game where the people who rolled poorly (and ended up making Charisma their dump stat) ended up swapping out their characters for ones with better stats. They discovered that Charisma is actually useful in our game.

Now we use a 35-point buy (actually the last campaign we started we used 40 points because the characters are from a harsh environment), not because we think playing gods is fun, but because it's a low-magic setting and stat-boosting items are particularly rare, as is resurrection magic. In such a setting, you need higher stats to compensate for the lack of magic items in order that difficult encounters don'r irrevocably wipe out half the party (and we prefer to adjust the characters upward for a more heroic feel rather than adjust the challenges downward). We like having characters whose natural abilities are more important than their gear.

Our group used to do 4d6 drop the lowest and arrange as desired. We've now gone to a modified point buy system. In essence, we agree to the total ability modifier for the character (+8 for example--before racial modifiers) and then choose the ability scores. Maximum starting ability score is 18 and lowest is 8 (again, pre-racial adjustments). Three ability scores must be odd numbers and the other three must be even.
This has worked very well for us.

We roll 3 sets of the organic method as per the dmg. You use one and store the others, if you lose your store and you need another pc you have to roll organic.

One guy rolled two crap back-ups so he'll take his chances. I don't think we'll need those back-ups anyway.

4d6, drop lowest, arrange as desired.

We've used that method since we pretty much started playing (1982). Always worked for us (still playing with two guys from my original gaming group from 22 years ago).

Our current version is...

Roll 21d6

Drop three low rolls

Arrange the rest in sets of three dice

Arrange these triplets as your ability scores

So it is sorta of halfway in between point buy and random...
