What class would you consider the ultimate Jack of all trades

I'd go with wizard/sorcerer. With the right spells, he makes a great melee warrior, scout or healer (via summon monsters, usually, though polymorph spells can do it). To cap it off, nobody can match a wizard/sorcerer for offensive spellpower. I've played wizards that took the place of the party rogue, the party cleric and has filled in front line fighter duties. If I had to pick one class, I'd go with sorcerer ... most sorcerers can put a few cross class ranks in UMD and get their charisma high enough to successfully take 10 on UMD checks to use clerical wands.

Are you allowed to do that? Doesn't the fact that the wand could "go off" mean you can't take 10?

Hmm. My 3.0 Jack of all trades had barbarian, ranger, rogue, bard and one sorcerer level.

Mainly bard though. He was pretty useful though he was three levels behind the rest of the group till he went toe to toe with a level 10 fighter to save an even weaker newbies @$$. Hmm. He was bbn1/rog2/rgr1/brd4. Planned to take a level of sorcerer soon ;)

Ah well: He still took that fighter down to 3 hp :D

What about an Eldritch Knight Bard? ;)

Otherwise I'd go for a Rog/Bard mix. Perhaps 2 Fighter levels.

Bards kick ass. Yes, even in combat. If you have decent physical stats you can do pretty well. At 9th you can give yourself +4 to hit and +2 to damage, plus 2d10 temporary hitdice (modified by Con). That alone makes you the equal of the straight fighter. Plus you can cast haste and alter self... bards are pretty damn good in combat. I know, I have a 9th level bard in Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil.

Now, granted, the Bard truly shines when he's pumping up the entire party... haste and inspire courage totally rock. It's funny, in 3.0, the wizards were always the ones casting haste, now in 3.5, I never see them cast haste, but the bard knows its his duty to make the party better.

I'm a little bit sad about the changes in the spell list of the 3.5 bard... they really made him worse as a fighter. The archer bard with Magic Weapon spells is impossible. See invisibility as last resort spell is kicked up a level. The moral spells with to hit bonuses don't stack with his singing... and to boost himself he needs two standard actions for singing alone (at least these bonuses stack!!!)

Ah well. And I'll miss True Strike with my bbn1/bardX power attacker.
