For those who complain that the killoren, er, wilden, are too far away from the core ideas of D&D fantasy . . . what more traditional fantasy race concepts are left? I can't think of any right now, but then again, it's late Friday at work and the weather outside of my window looks soooo nice . . . .

That's a good idea for a fork, soooo...

Hobbit.
Kender.

More seriously,
Shade.

We're still waiting on the kalashtar and the doppelgangers, but I trust that they'll be in Eberron.

Which ones do we know about?

For example, today's tiefling bears little resemblance to the original.

Many of hte races from the old Psionic's Handbook, including the old half-giant aren't there.

And speaking of the halve's, what about the old half-ogre? Busting down doors and wieldling bastard swords one handed since first edition no?

I think what one needs to do, is decide what "classic" and "traditional" is. Since, while say for example a Thri-Keen is deemed a classic race from early editions, people who say they want to play a "traditional fantasy" game wouldn't ever consider that.

I think that is more what the difference is. People who don't want races to go far from elves, dwarves, etc. Then there is also those who like more exotic races.

I think 4e has covered the majority of "traditional races".

Well the asian flavored classics can also be considered traditional fantasy by a lot of people and I don't see why they need to be reserved for whatever PHB comes with the ki power source (since they most likely use classes from the divine and primal power sources). Plus there are a lot of anthopomorphic animals there and WotC has stated an intent to introduce such races at some point (hengeyokai, nezumi, kitsune?).

Beyond those I guess we are missing the centaur (though being quadrapeds they are tricky). Cannot think of something else though.

We are "missing" plenty of good races with a psionic and/or asian theme, and I actually wasn't even thinking of them initially as I just expected to see them in a future PHB that covers the psionic and/or ki power sources.

The goliath covers both the half-giant and half-ogre in the "big-ass monstrous guy" category. Not that an official half-giant and/or half-ogre wouldn't be cool, but I can't see them as being all that thematically different.

Shifters cover the anthropomorphic person theme, or "furries", pretty well. While I was a big fan of animal-heads like the lupin, rakasta, and even hengeyokai . . . I'd rather see them all folded into the shifter race.

For example, today's tiefling bears little resemblance to the original.

I just have to say . . . . huh?!?! Exactly how is the 4e tiefling radically different from the 2e/3e tiefling? Humans with devilish blood or taint, often with odd-colored skin, scales, tails, horns, maybe glowing eyes . . .

They aren't the same of course. Today's tiefling look would have fit perfectly in the older editions, but now it is more unified across the race. The fluff of today's tiefling also would have worked perfectly in older editions as well, but again, it's one devilish origin for the entire race.

But little resemblance? Come on . . . .

Besides, the tieflings we've seen so far are simply the majority of tieflings of "the world". Who's to say some unlucky sod in some remote village isn't descended from Bael Turath but has another devilish background. And he's got goat legs, a shrimpy tail, tiny horns, and pale skin. Or perhaps out in the Astral Sea are tieflings of more diverse backgrounds and looks. None of that is "core" in 4e of course, but neither does it contradict 4e "core" either.

Most races we think of in fantasy are the traditional Tolkien races. However, there may be more beyond to consider. Many, like the irda, are world-specific.

What about faeries? While elves and eladrin come close to this, we don't see any with wings or diminuitive in stature. For that matter, what about avariels? While they're winged elves, we could always make them a separate race, much like how eladrin and elves are now separate races.

I guess the thri-kreen are solidly lumped in with the psionic races now.

Monstrous races, such as goblins and kobolds, will likely remain in the Monstrous Manual, but some might be adapted for use in a future PHB.
