What "classic" races are left? -- Forked Thread: PH3 Playtest Race: Wilden

Yeah, but some of em sure can bite.
Game mechanics, not fluff.

I'm not saying that the animals can't bite. I'm just saying that they can't benefit from weapon-using classes. Which is part of the point of some of those classes, being able to customize what weapon you use (reach vs. high crit vs. access to certain feats, etc).

It would require a whole different subsystem just so the race can function in the various classes. That's too much work for just a race.

Sure, you'd have plenty of limitations, but you'd also have some unique opportunities, especially given animal senses.
Again, game mechanics, not fluff. "Given animal senses" is going to mean +2 to Perception or something.

I'd just like to see more 'official' versions of the monster races
I honestly think this is what they'll do with DDi. Assuming they put any more freaking articles out.

Minotaur and gnoll got it. (Warforged too). Gnome (and half-orc) is in the PHB2 purely because the gnome was missing from the PHB1.

Instead of Centaurs, maybe the Satyr? Human/Animal hybrids are traditional fantasy, but haven't, to my knowledge, seen a lot of play as actual PC races. Lizardmen are an option, but that skews close to the Dragonborn. Still, wouldn't mind seeing a race or two of them.

From a mechanical point of view there is no CON-INT or WIS-CHA race yet.

The WIS-CHA would be the perfect prescient bard or radiant cleric, but would suffer having both bonuses in the same defense pair (like Eladrin and Goliaths). This would allow it to have stronger racial abilities, and since its ideal builds are ranged it could be small, so perhaps a pixie?

A CON-INT race would be totally arcane-focused, and could in fact build an entire party of clones with the same stats: 8-18-10-18-12-12 with a staff wizard, shielding swordmage, artificer and infernal warlock filling the 4 roles. It would also make a wild bard multimulticlass (8-16-10-16-10-17) with all 4 of those classes. What sort of race would this be? Perhaps myconids or plant-folk of some kind (though that might look too much like the wilden), half-illithids, or something created by magic.

I could very well see the Elan as being a Con + Int race. They are naturally/psionically very resilient (Resistance, Resilience and Repletion were racial abilities in 3.5). They also had Psion as their favoured class (intelligence based), had a extremely long lifespan (gain knowledge).

So if 4e Psionics takes some of the trend from 3.5 and the Psion with intelligence. Then I think, the Elan would fit nicely.

"Furries" might indeed be missing.

So I'd nominate Arcana Evolved races:
- Litorian (+2 Dex, +2 Wis), Claws, Racial Power might be claws-related (Pounce?)
- Sibeccai (+2 Con, +2 Wis), Bite, Racial Power might be bite-related

The githyanki in the Monster Manual are +2 Con, +2 Int. I am pretty sure we'll get a full race write up for them at some point. It may even be in PH3 if they decide to cover the psionic power source.

Actual monster PC classes (ala savage species). None of this watered down LA+0 basic race crap. :]

I will take a true dragon over a dragonborn any day.
