What consitutes the proper Dark Elf setting and environment?

Even fiction is useful as I am currently reading the War of the Spider Queen Series and own, on the last book, Plot & Poison A Guidebook to Drow

I also recommend the Elric series for their Melniboneans, cruel ancient high magic race of decadent chaos worshippers. The author is Michael Moorcock.

If Drow were hunted to near-extinction by those evil surface elves that would feel like a dark elf campaign. Or at least it wouldn't be a uber-elven ruler's of caves game.

A drow-focused campaign is a recipe for disaster IMO. After a couple of battles of having to continuously roll spell resistance checks and Fort saves against poison, your players will be ready to revolt. I ran half of the City of the Spider Queen module and I was ready to pull my hair out. Drow are just annoying.

Hope that helps. :p

There is a very nice drow-centered adventure written by Monte Cook for Fiery Dragon Productions titled "Queen of Lies". It's available for download as a watermarked PDF over at www.drivethrurpg.com .

Political intrigue, depravity, betrayal, espionage and an underdark (oops, I mean Netherdeep) enclave. Plus spiders. Big, nasty spiders.
