What counters silence

Ventriloquism has a verbal component. Therefor it would have to be a silenced version of the spell to be able to be cast from inside a sphere of silence.

My apologies - I meant the Ventriloquism is running before the Silence occurs.

Another precombat buff - Cat's Grace, Mage Armor, Ventriloquism, Haste, Shield.

This makes the person inside the sphere effectivly deaf. Therefor the verbal component cannot be cast from outside the sphere using ventriloquism.

Good point about the Deafness - but deafness isn't automatic failure for a (V) spell, it's a 20% arcane failure chance. Which I agree should be applied.

Ventriloquism says "you can make your voice *seem* to issue from someplace else".

So the sound is actually coming from you it just *seems* to be coming from somewhere else. So I'd say no, it wouldn't work if you are silenced.

I would definitely have to agree with this.

Since (once again) nobody has mentioned one of the best and most obvious defences for arcane casters, I'll chip it in.

Globe of invulnerability. Sure its immobile, but no silence spell exists within its confines, giving you plenty of opportunity to use whatever magic you would normally use to confound/kill the monk or escape. It is a great spell for any wizard of 7th+ level to have available (on scroll perhaps?) for use when defending his lair, *especially* if he is intelligently protected by fortifications - e.g. looking through an arrow slit at his enemies rather than engaging them on an arena floor. He can fling his fireballs without problem, they can't fireball him or tag him with any spells of 3rd level or lower.

Why this defensive spell doesn't get more use I can't imagine!

Cheers
