What details do you miss from older editions?

Simplicity!
  • Stat blocks were very short;
  • I could create an NPC in less than 2 minutes;
  • I could create a high level NPC in less than 2 minutes;
  • Adventures and settings were less focused in the rules (crunch); and
  • Players were less focused in rules.

Additionally:
  • Greyhawk was really the standard setting;
  • Rangers were cooler;
  • Sanctuary spell that precluded further resurrections;
  • No horizontal lines messing with the readability of the text;
  • Better and more varied covers; and
  • More "down to the earth" interior art.

I miss DiTelrizzi.
I miss details about the habits and ecologies of monsters.
I miss the Para-Elemental and Quasi-Elemental Planes.
I miss the hordelings of Hades.
I miss Treasure Types.

Demiurge out.

Boating, Fire-Building and Fungus Identification proficiencies. My GM has just recently decided to add a Boating skill back into our 3e game.

Surely Boating is covered by Profession (Sailor)?

Cheers!

Believe me, we've had that argument. Profession (sailor) governs how much you get paid for being a sailor. It no more covers boating (especially small boats) than Profession (groom) covers riding.

What do I miss from the pre-3E days? Everything not related to mechanics.

2E especially marked the halcyon days of world (and multiverse) development. Intricate storylines for the various campaigns cropped up, and sometimes even spilled into each other. There were multiple worlds, and they were each developed extremely well. 3E's laissez faire attitude to campaign development is a real killjoy for me, offset only by how good the mechanics of the game have become.

I miss....

1. DiTerlizzi - Sure I like other artists better, but DiTerlizzi made the 2e Monstrous Manual not suck. ;)
2. Monster Ecologies

That's pretty much it. I started playing during the end of 2ed as such, I have very little regard for what other people consider 'sacred cows' or whatnot.
