There's your mystery right there. What really happened?
They probably hit him with the pommel of the sword. To subdue, like.

In any case, my biggest grief in the other thread was that rules for subdual don't allow for accidental murder and that the DM changing those rules as they are being applied was unfair towards the players.

In this case, however, it's an NPC doing it to an NPC, and off the stage too, so in my opinion there's nothing wrong.

As for it being evil, the consensus was and is that kidnapping, violence, extortion and accidental murder are evil things (how surprising!), and I agree 100%.

The next day we talk to the corpse to see what happened. Well he said he was kidnapped by our rivals, he tried to escape so they hit him with a sword and he died. The church was nice enough to give us a divination to find out the bad guys are running towards procampur. Our game ends and will pick up next Thurs.

Since when is the Church of Tyr into casting black necromancy spells to gain information? I would have never allowed a cleric of Tyr to cast Speak with the Dead.

And yet Tyr advocates finding truth, Speak With Dead, and punishing the guilty, so he sounds like an "Ends justify the means..." kind of guy. I'm not up on him, though.

The act would probably be evil. You might be able to squeak CN out of it if they truely thought you wronged them first, if they never INTENDED to hurt the inkeeper, ect. Maybe Chaotic Stupid. :) But evil seems to fit best.

Since when was Speak with Dead "black necromancy?" It's not like it's an animate dead or something.

After reading the thread you guys posted it sounds like he put us on the other side of the story. He just mentioned he got the idea from here. I never noticed the mace/sword till you pointed it out. I remeber the cleric of tyr used a heal check to see if we could determine how our friend died (He likes CSI). Dm said it looks like a mace hit him. We spoke with dead and our friend said he saw Jerim (one of the bad guys) draw a sword when he tried to run and that was when it all went black. Never noticed that. Maybe the Dm messed up or we just didn't roll high enough on heal check we'll see.

Also I don't think speak with dead is evil. Its a necromancy spell but not all necromancy spells are evil.

We are playing this weekend I'll tell you what happens.

As for Enigma, I couldn't believe nobody took the name :D

It's no more black necromancy than Stone Tell as far as I can tell. The only difference is that the corpse has some memories of being sentient in it, whereas Stone doesn't even have a nervous system. :)
