What do I need to play d20 Modern?

You know how you need the core rulebooks to play d20 (because things like character creation are not in the SRD)? Well, what do you need to play d20 Modern. Is everything needed in the d20 Modern SRD, or will I be missing some critical piece if I don't pick up the rulebook?

I think you will be cool just using the SRD, but I cant remember if the XP tables are in there or not, you will need to check.

Exacto. You'll need the books for character generation. But I suppose that's no different than D&D, really, so if you have the PHB you can wing it.

I'd suggest buying it, though, because the Modern line needs all the support it can get. Try it out, if you like it, spring for it.

XP tables and ability scores generation in d20 Modern is the standard one (i.e.: as in D&D). Nonetheless I suggest to get the d20 Modern rulebook if only for descriptions of what the classes (especially the advanced classes) represent. Plus there is stuff in the book (some FX advanced classes) that don't appear in the SRD. Note that vou could buy Modern System: Characters for 5$ only if you do find d20 Modern too expensive. Otherwise, the Menace Manual (maybe it's still available for 13$ only on amazon.com) is an excellent monster book (including NPCs and organizations) for d20 Modern.

I know this veers off your question a little but there are lots of 'world books' to chose from for Modern that you might enjoy. While not mandatory, they certainly are pretty well done.

Urban Arcana has a good equipment section and a stellar city construction section; the rest I can take or leave.

Weapons Locker & Ultramodern Firearms have a pretty wide assortment of guns (note for the former, not weapons).

But the d20 Modern SRD is basically self-contained.

The D20 Modern XP chart is slightly different (being smoother), but use the DnD one if you feel like it.

You don't need anything, but if you don't like the settings there are a few other settings out there. I suggest Dark Matter, Haven: City of Violence, Real-Life Roleplaying and whatever the implied setting of Raid on Ashkashem is :)
