What do I want? An apology.

An apology would definately go a long way towards mending the rift, but I agree with others that it probably won't happen. As for the DI, I would love to have something ... anything to get excited about. But I have absolutely nothing to base any optomism on.

WotC's proven ability to manage digital information ? Nope. (they have trouble with search engines)

WotC's proven quality of material and editing that is superior to what they have cancelled ? Nope

WotC's proven understanding of and connection with the wishes of their customers? Yeah ... right.

So I guess that until Wotc does anything to correct the mess they've made I'll stick with Deimodius and the many others who have voiced their opinion, both here and at the cash register.

Good luck with that apology thing.

Me, I'm waiting for the Texas Rangers to win the World Series.

Bento, that cracked me up. I've been to the Ballpark twice in the last week. I'm beginning to get the feeling this won't be the Ranger's World Series Season.

Me too. But I also want folks to remember that while they're upset, they're still to be civil here on the boards -- and that if you happen to think folks are complaining too much, el senor Dustyboots, injecting snarky comments isn't the way to express it.

See, all this bloviation about digital that and times change the other and it'll be just as cool them ignores some very, very essential things about those creaky old print mags:

"Hey, do you remember DRAGON #72 when the introduced the Cavalier?"

versus

"Hey, do you remember DIGITAL INITIATIVE DIRECTIVE AT HTTP://WWW.WIZARDS.COM/?&ASP=3/QUERY="WIZARD"AND"SPELLS"NOT"MAGICMISSLE".HTM"

See, just lacks something. "Dragon #72." versus "Some page I saw on wizard's website."

Showing up at the game with a copy of the magazine in your hand, everyone leaning 'round to have a look.

versus

Showing up at the game with your notebook, hey, I hope there's a WiFi hotspot near the store. Oh crap, there goes my battery, who's got an extension cord? Are we back up? Okay...dang this must be like 1mbit...this is taking forever to lo-oh, crap, there goes IE...hang on...shoot, took explorer down with it...let me reboot. Okay...anyway, uh, who's got the new minis pa-OK we're back up. Let me sign in. Oh dang it that IS SO my password. Stupid...let me ... okay, there...waiting...waiting. THERE! There it is! Yeah, that thing. Yeah. That's cool.

I am in no way convinced that the latter scenario is some how superior to a tried and true print magazine; nothing anyone (ANYONE) has said on the matter can or will convince me otherwise. But oh, it's going to be foisted on the D&D community ANYWAY!

That's what needs apologizing for.

Sorry, I don't ordinarily quote long blocks of text, but dammit Dungeon Delver, you deserve a big QFT here. Well said, dude.

Admittedly, WOTC could have handled the whole Dragon/Dungeon thing far better. I really do wonder why they did not have at least a Beta version of the DI up for people to look at just after they read the announcement. And they could have softened the blow by at elast seemingto consider people's opinions.

But in the end, it is their decision, and they really do not need to apologize for it. Do they need to apologize for choosing Eberron over all the other submissions in the long gone contest? Do they need to apologize for making 3.0 and 3.5 instead of sticking with 2E. Of course not.

I have voted with my pocketbook on Ebberon, and FR. I will vote with my pocketbook on this DI, most likely.

I'll do what I want with my money, but I'm not going to be demanding an apology from WOTC. It seems a bit strange to be demanding such.

No one deserves an apology for this any more than they would deserve an apology from Burger King if they stopped selling whoppers.

I liked Dragon and Dungeon. I'm sad they're gone. But WotC doesn't owe me anything. Just like I don't owe them anything. If they want my money, they have to earn it.

Apology!? Heh. Yeah, right.

I've been with this hobby for 20+ years and have filled out a great many surveys for TSR and WotC. They were never shy about asking the fans what they liked or disliked, even up to the switchover from 3.0 to 3.5.

I'm not sure when that ended, but its been a little while.

While I don't want to be a jerk and say WotC "doesn't care" how the fans feel about them axing these icons, I don't think its a situation where public opinion would have outweighed the decision they made. Obviously it was a business decision. A bad one for them? That remains to be seen, but I seriously doubt any kind of meaningful apology is forthcoming or, dare I say it, even appropriate at this point.

When you tell everyone you're not serving omelets anymore, you better just make damn sure the pancakes are good, know what I mean? ;)

I would imagine that there are a few WotC employees that would like an apology, too. That is, an apology from hot-headed, big-mouthed arm-chair quarterbacks. You don't like the decision, that's fine. It's your right to not like it. It's also your right to shoot your mouth off about it.

What I want to know is: how many pointless, impotent, self-aggrandizing threads are going to get started on this issue? It's over and done with. WotC doesn't owe you anything on the matter, least of all an apology. You don't own it. It isn't an essential entity in your life. It's absence isn't going to cause you any undo hardship (and don't tell me "game prep" is a hardship).

WotC owes you somewhat less of an apology for killing Dragon and Dungeon than it owes Diaglo for killing OD&D. As I've said elsewhere, I can fully understand some anger over the decision. The level of outrage being demonstrated over a niche, recreational publication is absurd. The mere fact of playing RPGs demonstrates a high affluence (on an absolute scale). Apparently, the stereotypes of a dilettante's legendary temper tantrums over petty slights applies accordingly.

One might say the same about threads scolding people for expressing their displeasure...
