What do people buy with thier gold?

Depends

For me it depends on the character I am playing. One of my favorites was a gnome who was obsessed with making golems so all of his money went into that.

Mostly they've bought magic, but since the last 'incident' with the Red Wizards, they've not been able to buy any potent stuff.

But as for more intresting stuff, they rented space and started an office for their adventuring company. They got an artist do a sign on the outside ('Slayers of Evil') and a roster list with their kills on the wall. (Kind of a scoreboard). They also hired a receptionist in a fulltime position.

I tend to buy lots of Grey Ioun Stones and Everburning Torches.

Don't know why...

P.S. Oh yeah, and Quaal's feather token (tree) and (swan boat):

Need cover? BAM! Got an oak tree!

Need a diversion? BAM! A HUGE Swan Boat appears in front of you!

My players are currently adventurers in the world of Forgoten Realms, which is known for it's large amounts of magical items. They have deveated a dragon, taken his hoard and also aquired a hoard of items from some old abandoned ruins. They didn't have a clue what everything was, but guessed that it would be valuable. They went to Waterdeep and talked a bit with Mirth the Moneylender, who (for a fee) arranged for a wizard that would identify all the items. The wizard blew 70 charges from two wands of identify (which cost the part 20k in gold), they came to the scarry conclusion that they had items worth half a million gold pieces. Mirth was only willing to give half for it, they upped the price to 300k. They also wanted to buy certain ability boosters and a few other items, but they needed them overnight, cost increase 50% and not everything they wanted was available. All in all, they now have items they want (and have an apropriate value for their level), the rest was reserved for fortifying the town they own/control...

I'm not running a treasure rich game, but the PC's do find things to spend money on. The Samurai who's home is used as a base has had the people staying at his house grow from 4 to 12, so there is building to add on rooms, a new building to store the rice and sake the players brought back from their last excursion (they didn't make a ton of gold but they got enough sake and rice to last the next year:).

The Cleric of Silvanus is building a small shrine for offerings and then going to add a small living area in an oak for her grove.

The Lion training to become a samurai has this plot about starting a sake works in town.

The wizard has a new 'apprentice' to look after and will automatically spendevery bit of gold he gets outside of his emergency fund on scrolls, so he's perpetually poor. He does have plans for building a Rokugani style wizards tower though.:)

We had a player recently who started a lending company with his gold. Me?

I was just about to sink my funds into an armory, just before the war ended...

That same player's Star Wars character has amassed almost 100,000 credits - and if he had a mattress to stuff it under, he would. He was upset at the party because he paid 500 credits to an illegal arms vendor to find out what the vendor had available!

"Greed" is putting it lightly. :D

The other day, I asked the players I DM for what they think they spend their treasure on. The party consists of a druid 5/shifter 8, wizard 10, barbarian 12, and psion 9/ranger 1. I was told 50% goes to healing (especially reversing energy/stat drains) and 50% to magic items. They really need a cleric. :)

My group is most fond of magic weapons and stat boosting items. The sorceress has finally amassed enough gold to make her Cloak of Charisma +6 (just what I need:( )

I for one LOVE having magic available for sale. It gives the characters something to spend their treasure on. Also, I don't have to 'customize' the treasure to the heroes. I roll randomly, they find what they find. If they can't use or don't like what they find, sell it and have something custom made.

Though I will note that for the most part the characters can't walk up and select anything off the shelf. Most magicsmiths will have a few items on hand, but for the most part you are looking at having things made. This has been a limitation before too - if the characters only have a week in town, there is only so much that can be made.

At this point, I'm so disillusioned with the Diablo-like aspects of 3E that if one of my PCs spent more than 500gp on something that doesn't help him in combat (or in other adventuring situations), I'd probably kiss him (and then be thoroughly disgusted afterwards :D).
