Growing up in Ohio, everyone used the term "pop." When I went to college (still in Ohio), the majority of my classmates were from out of state and used the term "soda," which I slowly adopted. My brother and local friends even switched to saying "soda." Now, over 30 years later, it sounds odd to me when I hear someone use the term "pop."
Pop still going strong here in MN and WI.

Well, trademark genericization is not an issue local to you (just those particular brands are). Also see Xerox, Hoover, Google, Aspirin, Linoleum, Thermos, etc. Even 'Heroin'!
And "band-aids" (what you would call, I think, a plaster).

On the subject, I wouldn't call that a coke unless it was a coke, though most restaurants near me will call it a coke, even if it's a pepsi. I'll call the group of carbonated sugar-drinks "pop" - but I don't like pop, so I don't have to say it very often.

Here it's always:

"A pint of coke, please."

"Is Pepsi OK?"

"Sure."

They USED to do that here, but somewhere along the line they got lazy and just serve you whichever they have. Or so it's been my experience, I never order the stuff, but my kids do (or did, they're getting old enough to have better taste!)

Oh, in case it's not known where I'm talking about (and in case someone local has a different experience), I'm talking Canada's West Coast. Vancouver-ish.

Same here in New England, although it's common for Coke drinkers to decline a Pepsi and order something else instead.
