Here in the spanish-speaking country of Chile people actually say Coca-Cola. Crazy, I know. Sometimes they just shorten it to Coca (which I say for convenience sometimes despite disliking saying it for reasons that are unknown to my brain). They also refer to all carbonated drinks with their proper names, like Pepsi or Dr. Pepper.

If I'm speaking english, I'll just say Coke if I know it's Coca-Cola and refer to the other sodas with their proper names. If I don't know what it is, I'll say soda.

Before I discontinued imbibing them thirty years ago, I called it Dr. Pepper or nothing. I'd even made the pilgrimage to the Dr. Pepper Museum.

These days, black coffee provides all my caffeine requirements.

You are partially correct. “Soda” originally referred to sodium bicarbonate. However, it came to be associated with the carbonate part rather than the sodium part. Fizzy drinks are carbonated.

Note, even early "sodas" were made fizzy by adding carbon dioxide - that dates back to the 1700s, even.

Some sodium bicarbonate was sometimes added, but not to make water fizz. When you add carbon dioxide to water, you get carbonic acid - the sodium bicarbonate was to control acidity.

I tend to use soda as a generic term. I will refer to the name of the product when being specific. I don't want to get a Coke when I actually want Dr. Pepper or Pepsi. I might say orange soda instead of the brand name because I have no preference in orange soda. Fanta and Crush branded sodas taste the same to me. I'd probably use cola if I wanted to differentiate between cola and non-cola sodas. That rarely comes up though.

I was wondering where they got the CO2 from back then. I had envisaged rows of small children, overjoyed to be spared their usual job down the mines, exhaling frantically into tubes. But it turns out they used gas from the brewing industry. Boring!
