What do you do when your character dies?

How has everyone changed as they matured? For instance, as a kid I'd (a) cry, then (b) make up "Bilbo II" or "Sir Tristram II" or whatever. But I was six then.

It's way creepier when a teenager or adult starts bawling.

SHUTUP.

MOM mmadsen is amking fun of me again.

As to the quesiton considering how you died in such a lame way, on the 1st night of gameing I'd say nothing wrong with building the same character. You never got to play this one because some idiot in the party killed you. Me as GM in a situation like this I generally would find a way to make you live and make Mr. magic grenade die. OOOps sorry there's a disturbance in the weave, make a dc500 con check to hold onto it. Sorry you failed there's a magic backlash called Karma and you just explode into green flame and die a painful death.

DM's helper

I've always played my characters to the fullest and got attached to quite a few. Each has been unique and I like it that way. One way I enforce this uniqueness is to give my dead character to the DM, tell him to change the name to protect the innocent and use it as an NPC. Knowing that my characters are actually "living" in another guise discourages me from generating clone characters.

I really like that idea Shard :D these are all some great ideas. I may read through the classes a bit more closely before the next game. I am strongly leaning towards playing the similar character again (mainly so I can get that Masterpiece two rivers long bow again that I had back mmmmm). Except this time I might make him 1st level Noble 2nd level Woodsman for a bit of variety. Probably for the reason that has been said before - because it was the first game and there was not much character development!

I've never played the same sort of character twice in a row. Which has left the party in a bit of trouble when I was playing the only cleric and my character drowned. My next character was a Wizard and the party had to do without any healing for a while.

I can see the reason for using a 'cloned' character if your character is died before you really had any chance to play them.

"Recycling" a character's basic concept and role is often the more realistic way anyway - especially in games like D&D or Shadowrun, where you just got to have a Cleric or Decker or whatever.

The personality shouldn't be the same, though, in most cases. But since your character died so early, even this shouldn't be a problem.

When a character dies, I shout:

"NO! NOT BLACK LEAF! NO, NO! I'M GOING TO DIE!!!
Don't make me quit the game! Please don't! Somebody save me! You can't do this!"
:D

If you've read Dark Dungeons you'd understand.

Seriously,
It depends on how the character dies if I get upset or not. If its a cheesy death or if the DM is a putz, then yeah, I get a little angry. Usually I just roll up another character.

Generally, if one of my characters dies, I make one attempt at finding a means to raise or resurrect the poor sod. If that's not an option, or I've exhausted my one return from the grave (a self-imposed rule), I will almost always play a VERY different PC type. Probably my favorite part of D&D is the character creation process, and heaven knows I have a wide array of unused concepts I'd love to try.

If my character dies, I b**** and moan for a little bit, go upstairs and play the computer for a little bit while the rest of the party decides what to do with me, and then raise the character if I liked him a lot, or just scratch up a new character concept that I've had in my head for a little while.
