What do you think about Psionics?

I'm thinking about using Psionics in my campaign now. Is it really worth getting into when we have wizards & sorcerers or is it just additional work with no real improvement to the fun of the game?

One reason I never used it is because I'm intimidated by an entire book on using a single class. Would anyone mind explaining in detail how you use psionic rules in the game? I would also be interested in hearing about psionic fluff in the game if you have good reasons to use the class.

If it sounds easy to use and worth sticking in the game, I'll probably go buy the Expanded Psionic Handbook.

To be fair, it has three classes plus a dozen or so prestige classes. The majority of the rules are in the SRD also, so you can check them out there first.

The system is a bit different than the normal sorcerer/wizard, but in a sense very much the same. With the exception of a few specific power combinations, there is nothing too terribly broken (but the same could be said about certain spells [I'm looking at you, Wraithstrike]).

I'd say give it a good thorough reading with an open mind.

I would say give any new system a chance, and Psionics is the most accessible, as it is in the SRD also. So at least you do not have to buy the book to use it. Or check it out.

I like psionics a lot, and have liked them since 1E when they were totally screwy, and even in 2E when balance was totally off.

They will add a more versatile spell system to yourgmae, and they are far better than sorcerors at being able to have th right thing at the right time. They can even heal a bit. However, they are not buffers, which is something I like a lot, as it seem that is all spellcasters are expected to do any more in this game.

I like to play them because they are versatile and you have to make choices every single round.

Hey, its not Dragon Magic.

I would suggest going slowly into it. Choose a psionic monster, study up on it's powers, and then run it against the party. That way you can learn the system before opening it to the players.

Personally, I like the system and am always happy when a player wants to use a psionic character.

If you use psionic PCs remember that you really have to add a lot of psionic gear and maybe plot threads to the game as is.

Read over the SRD, start small, and see if you like it.

Here's another vote in favor of Psionics. This time around psionics really meshes well with the core rules. While I always enjoyed psionics before, it always felt like a poorly thought-out system for a totally different game tacked onto D&D. Not so this time around.
