What do you think of one min per level spells?

One min per level spell effects?

I'm of two minds on this:

I think the 2nd level stat buffs (Bull's Strength, Cat's Grace, etc) should be 1 minute / level.

However, I also think there should be a 4th (or thereabouts) level version that is slightly better and lasts 1 hour / level. Maybe 1d6+1, say. Name them after supernaturally potent examples of their ideal. Giant's Might, Grace of the Wind, Tenacity of the Really Big Cockroach, and so on

Hmm. Your opening remark is quite ironic given the bias present in the poll.

Compare the wording you used:
a)Great!
b) Bad idea!
c) neutral

with the following:

a) Good idea!
b) Bad idea!
c) neutral

which is a neutral poll (ie - most people see the words good and bad as of equal intensity).

Or

a) It's ok, I guess.
b) this idea is so horrible that it should never even be thought of again!
c) neutral.

Now that's the option I'd pick.

At 1 min/level, they'd be balanced as 1st level spells (and not particularly good ones at that--compare them to Shield of Faith, Divine Favor, Magic Missile, Mage Armor, Sleep, Color Spray, or any other A-list 1st level spells). As 2nd level spells, they're utterly hopeless without longer duration.

I don't see much bias in the poll.

Anyway, I think these spells are alright. To me, they are best used with low-level spells that would be useless to a low-level caster at 1 rd/level and too good at 1 hour/level. Like shield, it's a great preparatory spell for a caster that knows he's going into combat. Same with the buff spells, which is why I like the change to them. I prefer spellcasters that use their spells during the course of a game, rather than all at the beginning of the day to make the characters super heroes. Thus the extra minutes are just like gravy, and not really a problem. If people want to rush into the next combat, let them, it really just means they are risking more or using up more of their non-expendable resources like potions and scrolls. If they got 'em to burn, why not use 'em?

I would prefer 2 or 3 minutes per level. That would reduce the "hurry up to the next monster" factor. The other alternative being to ditch the spell per day limitation.
