This came up recently in the thread on best and worst campaign settings.

I noticed that a lot of people out there seem to dislike Spelljammer for some reason, and yet when Shadow of the Spider Moon came out, we heard from Erik Mona that a lot of people wrote in to criticize his critique of the original Spelljammer. So, show your opinion here!

I personally really liked Spelljammer and would love to see it brought upto 3E. Shadow of Spider Moon was interesting, but not exactly how I wanted to see it updated. I guess the update was too limited in scope. Which I understand was partially because of the medium it was updated in.

I would probably have to say that I liked Spelljammer a lot but resented the silliness of the setting (i.e. the Giff). As of my vote, I am alone! Of course, only three people have voted so far. :D

Since my current campaign is is a spelljammer-esque setting, I feel duty-bound to support it.

And it irks me to no end that I missed the Shadow of the Spider Moon info in Dungeon. Do you remember which edition it was?

Anyone?

Spelljammer: Shadow of the Spider Moon premiered in Dungeon #92/Polyhedron #151. It was, of course, for Third Edition.

Never liked it as a stand-alone setting but it back-ends onto existing settings wonderfully, travel to new worlds, meet people, laugh evilly and nuke em till they glow :D

I've never played Spelljammer (Well, except in a freeform online game), But I always liked the concept, even if I've never seen the books and stuff.

Spelljammer could have been a cool and weird campaign setting... But it shouldn't have been tied to D&D (I believe the same is true for Planescape, BTW). It just feels different to me.

I used to run a lot of campaigns in 2e days, and after Spelljammer came out, just about all of them had spelljamming as at least -possible-, and I did run a couple of Spelljammer campaigns, with the Rock of Bral and all that good stuff.
Dunno that I'll go back to it, but it sure was fun.

I never found it difficult to ignore anything I thought was really lame, either.. such as the space hamsters.

I have never run a 2e game in my life (I regressed... when 2e came out I moved from 1e to OD&D and kept running OD&D until 3e was released).

So, my opinion is TOTALLY based on my observations of the books, boxed set, and little tid-bits here and there I have seen of SpellJammer.

And my opinion is that the old SJ 2e was too silly in many ways. Three words... Hamster, Giant Space.

On the other hand, I really like the texture of Shadow of the Spider Moon - it felt more like Space 1889 victorian spelljamming than classic pseudo-medieval spelljamming - and I think that spelljamming mixes VERY nicely in a neo-victorian setting.
