Who knows, he could turn out to be a really fun guy to have around. But if he's disrupting your game or you're worried that he might cause any other problems, then I'd drop him.

Do you own any real magic items?

This, alone, would go a long way to screening out potentially dangerous people from gaming groups...or garner the opportunity to trade some of your own.

I think you did what could be done. You talked to the guy and asked him to stop dressing like that and he didn't. Your wife, for whatever reason, doesn't think he should be around. You gave the guy a chance, it didn't work out. It happens.

While I've seen this sort of thing at conventions, I've never seen it at a weekly game session. I've had people bring medieval weapons, but only when it was mentioned before hand, everyone knew he was bringing it and no one had any problems with it. He used it to show use some proper uses for the man-gauge and we modified how it worked in game becasue of that. Also, this sort of thing is fine and excepted at conventions. I know many people who dress up at conventions, that would never do it at a gaming session. Conventions are like Halloween for grown ups lots of time.

If he's making you or other people feel uncomfortable then you should dump him. But if he just likes to dress up and act eccentric, then I don't see a real problem. I'm not saying he is, but even the mentally ill should have the right to play D&D.

I feel like I'm in the minority on this, but I cherish diversity in this hobby. In fact, I'd love to play a game with a bunch of "freaks" as you may call them as long as their good roleplayers and fun to be around. Personally, I've never dressed in costume or whatnot, but my fantasy is to DM a game with the best roleplayers in the world who could possibly look like the following:

1. Immensely overweight guy with beard and glasses who's been playing D&D and other strategy games since the mid 70's. (Dwarf Fighter)

2. Freakishly tall and thin goth transexual who looks like Marilyn Manson and wears all black robes. (Elf Wizard)

3. Big jock guy who always likes to the play the fighter and just learned 3e. (Human Paladin)

4. Hot blonde viking chick (with the horned helmet) who doesn't take s*** from male gamers. (Human Cleric)

5. Really smart young guy who knows all the rules (technically, a rules lawyer) and takes advantage of all adventure situations (overhanging cliffs in a cavern, etc). (Halfling Rogue)

Wouldn't that be fun???
:D

Insufficent information. The guy dresses oddly. He fairly consistently refers to a bag as if it were magical. Did he do anything else? If those were the only signs, I'd have to suggest that the guy doesn't really believe anything odd. It sounds more like an affectation than an actual mental disturbance.

*shrug*. You were the only one there. Only you can choose the appropriate action.

I agree with Umbran. It's hard to say.

Personally, I would have been afraid if he brought real weapons and armor with him, but he didn't. Now as for the way he dresses, he should be able to dress any which way he wants just like you or I.

Again, if this or anything else he does bothers you or the other gamers in the group, drop him. If he just plains annoys you and what he does distracts from the game, drop him.

But as for your wife, she sounds to me like she may already have a bias against gamers (and possibly the mentally ill) before having met this guy. However, she lives in that house, too, and is entitled to have a say about who is welcome and not welcome.
