What do your Heroes do when they Retire?

When I end a campaign, it's over. All the PC's become nothing more than dragon food, or occasionally, brought back as undead minions for a one-shot game :]

Only had two characters truly "retire," in that the campaign ended and they were still alive and with the party.

The first, an alcoholic archer, opened a private archery training camp on a small demiplane. He occasionally ventured out to get samples of various alcohols (his prized possesion was a lesser artifact flask that would reproduce any beverage poured into it), but that's about it.

The second went crazy after attempting to kill a dragon on his own (Frenzied Berserker, for those wondering), and just wandered off to be a roaming menace in the kingdom. The rest of the party, rather than trying to kill him, let him go.

Orbril the Gnome was an alchemist I played for many years. During his lifetime he stowed away in the luggage of a newly appointed ambasador, defeated an invading Airship with fireworks, road on the back of a dragon (almost freezing to death in the proces), helped uncover a plot to assasinate the emperor and so became something of a national hero. He was eventually offered the a Governorship in one of the Imperial provinces but turned it down and started a travelling circus where he continues to this day as its 'Day Man' (he appears whenever I DM). As an adjunct to the Circus he also built a School of Performing Arts and a couple of Arena's (used for horse racing, martial displays and circus shows).

Most others go back to become leaders of their towns/tribes etc.

One became a goddess of War (DM fiat)

That's just hilarious :D! How did the sheep/elf communicate?

It didn't. It was an elf with the intelligence and memories of a sheep. It just sort of sat there, made baaing noises and tried to eat grass. Funny thing was that if I had gone ahead and let my character die, then I would have been reincarnated into the elf and solved all my problems anyway. As it was I knew I had 14 years before I outlived my nautral lifespan once again.

I have only had one character retire. He was only about 7th when he retired but he had met his goal of aquiring neough gold to start a horse breeding business.

Tour the land telling stories.
Settle down and start a family.
Start inventing things.
Well you can't 'retire' as the King but thats what's doing.
Start the final steps towards global domination, becomming and NPC and attempting to rule all with a gracious hand for wonderful rich's and equality.
To find something less dangerous, or a smarter group.
etc

My war priestess has aspirations to defeat the current Kha Khan and become the next one.

I have to plan my retirement 300+ years before the others. Damn elves and dwarves. :p

I did that as well, with someone else's character. We reached the end of a campaign because one of the players who had been with us since the beginning was leaving. So, I put an impossible scenario in front of them and they ultimately succeeded, but only through evil means, becoming evil themselves. One of them actually became the evil god of black magic. After we picked up a couple new players, the focus of the next campaign was to redeem the ones from the first.

Retire? They die with swords in their hands.
And half of their bodies in a dragon's belly. :]

But the swords are still in their hands. Okay, one cleric had a mace, but he held it to the end... And the wizards still kept his staff...
