What does FLGS stand for?

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm wondering what FLGS stands for. I've seen it all over these boards. I get the idea that the GS stands for "game store" but what about FL? "Fairly Local"? "Friendly Local"? "Fantasy Light?"

FLGS stands for "Friendly Local Gaming Store." This term is commonly thrown around by anti-corperation people who get angry whenever someone buys their gaming products from a discount retailer like Wal-Mart or Amazon.com. Just keep reading these forums for a while, and you'll eventually see a post that says something like "If you don't support your FLGS, role-playing will die as a hobby" or "You should support your local FLGS, even if it costs a little (translation: a lot) more."

Sorry for the mini-rant, but for me, FLGS has become one of those irritating terms that annoys me whenever I see it used, just like "kewl" and "newb."

I have been friendly with the owner of my FLGS for the past, oh, 15 years. Him and his employees have shared with me their love for games in general and RPG in particular over numerous conversations.

He sometimes come to the music instruments store I work in and I take good care of him, support-wise and price-wise. When I go buy stuff at his store, he does the same. Over the past 2 years we started switching conversations towards music. He's a great composer and made me listen to his tracks. I give him pointers music-wise.

You just can't have that type of relationship with your local Walmart owner...

That said, I think it's presomptuous to critisize someone's shoping habits, but I just think the extra 10 bucks are all worth it.

Ugg, me barbarian.

Me like lowest possible price.

Me sell soul for d20 supplements at website with cheapest price.

Me get d20 supplements 3 - 5 business days later.

Me think that "friendly" enough.

The term FLGS has been around for years, far longer than this web community or any of the debates taking place here, and generally has a completely neutral connotation. Any attempt to assign an agenda to it, or pretend it is indicative of any group more specific than "internet gamers" is misguided.

I first saw this abbreviation commonly used on usenet and certain mailing lists back in the early-mid 90s, before most folks reading this board had web access.

The standard definition is Friendly Local Gaming Store, but alternates such as Favorite or, um.., F'ing can be used to color the context. :)

I started using it as other people use it on here. For some reason it reminds me of Spider-Man as he sometimes refers to himself as "your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man." I know... I read too many comics. ;)

I would say 40% of the time I went to a store I would usually get a "weird Pete" kind of owner to deal with. I'm sure to this day many still do. ;)

I want to meet a Weird Pete! My RPG experience is not complete without it!

I also need to wargame, go to a Con, and a bunch of other things I missed out on, being born in the early 80's.
