What does it take for an RPG to die?

FGU still sells some titles in print, and I think (?) they may even have some material in active development. They recently re-released Bushido in print, and I picked up a full set of Flashing Blades in hardcopy from them a few months ago.

Yeah, it's hard to tell from their site (which is horrible about updates) until stuff shows up on sale. Definitely managing a new print run now and then, as well as slowly putting up old stuff on pdf that's been gone for years, eg War of the Sky Cities. I don't know how they make their business model run, but I guess it works for Bizar.

I only just now registered that some of the site banners are celebrating their 40 year anniversary, but they're dated from 2015 so this is actually their 50th year in business if you ignore gaps.

I used to know a Canadian on Fidonet who was ALL about Universe...
Fidonet. I got access to it via uucp early on.

There have been some really cool pointers I this thread.

One thing I can’t find is the original version of Warlock that TSR had cease and desisted into nonexistence.

Are you talking the CalTech D&D version of D&D with that name, or the other one?

Yes the CalTech one. There is a newer one from the 90s that I’ve heard is substantially different.

Yeah, as far as I know after the lawyers started making noises, the original Warlock vanished into private channels; if it exists in any form any more its probably private collections; you can fine an early 2000's revision, but as you say, I can't imagine it isn't quite different.

One example of a dead game in my experience is Continuum: Roleplaying in the yet. It was an already niche game from the start, its one planned splatbook never got published as far as I know, and I never see the game being discussed.

Are any games ever actually dead?

9-man Morris grew back.
there are groups playing ulama again.

An RPG that was once 'dead' may rise again, because humans have a habit of bringing things back from the dead.
