What exactly is a gestalt?

I've heard about them and I found a gestalt generator, and it seems that they're a combination of two classes, but what are the rules for them, and in what book can they be found (I don't own it, but I might want it)?

Unearthed Arcana - you get the best of the two classes - best of each save (so a Rogue/Cleric would get saves as a monk), best Hit Die (so a Barbarian/Sorceror would get d12 hit dice), best BAB (so that Barbarian/Sorceror would have full BAB), all special abilities of both classes (so your Cleric/Sorceror both prays for Divine spells and rests for Arcane spells, while your Rogue/Fighter gets bonus fighter feats, full sneak attack, and the assorted Rogue special abilities).

It's a power up for a campaign, really.

Ok, then I am letting the player in my single player campaign become a gestalt, because it has to be a high powered campaign anyways (due to her amazing stat rolls). She's a lvl 5 ftr, but what other class should I add? Ranger gives the 2 weapon fighting feats w/out using feats up, cleric allows healing, rouge allows trap detection and magic item use (but her full plate won't let her use the all-important evasion and hurts many rouge skills), or something else entirely?

Fighter Cleric is a good combo, gets 2 good saves, can cast spells, wear any armor, gets good HP, and can heal/buff self.

Fighter/Rogue works if you're a bit lighter in the armor department, gives you lots of skills, good saves, and some extra usefull powers. Fighter Bard could do this as well, though is a bit more restrictive.

Fighter Ranger, Fighter Barb, or Fighter Paladin don't get a lot extra, but gain a few fun elements.

Yah, I see what you mean. And please, if you're up, post here, even if it is not directly about this topic. I am bored. Very bored.

When you have Hiveminders on board for the ride, that's a recipe for disaster in the rules forum . If you like, though, try joining a zany discussion somewhere in Off-Topic (Hivemind in particular is recommended :))
