What famous people have played D&D?

Marcy Playground

A Cloak of Elvenkind (J. Wozniak)
A cloaking robe of elvenkind
hangs in my wardrobe behind
All the thing that mother said
were proper for a boy
And I know I could not say why
On this summer evening
Sixteen books of magic spells
stacked below the cloak of elves
And sixteen books on magic spells
So elegantly bound
And I know I could not say why
On this summer evening
And I know something...something about you
And I know something...something about you

A cloaking robe of elvenkind
hangs in my wardrobe behind
All the things that mother said
were proper for a boy

I'm pretty sure that proves it for them.

Here is a list I got off the car-pga list a while back, apperently from French site:

Rush (groupe)

-Angel Tears

Really? The whole group? I can see Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee for sure. I can almost see Neil Peart playing, given the fact that he writes the lyrics (especially the stuff from Caress of Steel through Hemispheres), though he always struck me as a bit to "serious" to game.

Anyone got a source for this, other than the french mailing list?

Robert Jordan used to DM for his kids and their friends when they were in junior high. At least, that's what he says in the forward to the Wheel of Time RPG.

Most of the rest of these names -- urban myth, I suspect.

Well not in the case of Jacques Villeneuve. The fact that he likes gaming is specifically mentioned in his pictural profile that was published the year after he won the F1 championship. There even is a picture of him with some gaming books, IIRC.

Do you really find it so difficult to believe famous people have played D&D?

I admit, when I was a teenager, I believed I was doing something really unique, that hardly anybody else was doing. But as I grew up, I was always surprised to find out how many other people my age had played in school or in college. Especially in the old heyday of the 80s.

Of course the vast majority didn't. But this thread is showing that quite a few do or did.

No, as a matter of fact, I suspect all kinds of famous people did it, at least, if they don't now. But just because someone posts a name from a list on this thread doesn't make it so. I'm only believing the ones that have independent confirmation! :)

Having looked at the list, I wouldn't be surprised that most of them (if not all) have played, just alone because of pieces I have seen on news stories from all over.

Simply put, enough play that one can claim a lot of famous people have at least played in the past - it's not like it doesn't prove it's not a niche hobby, but it at least disproves the whole "cult of losers" thing. :)
