2e

Though I've now played 3.Xe for longer than I played 2e in highschool, there's just something about thac0, fixed saving throws, racial class limits and absurd multiclassing that says, "DnD".

I suppose I'll always fondly remember the time spent trying to figure out what the rules said, and then saying, "buggerit", and making something up. I wouldn't want to play it now, but I do love 2e for those memories.

As much as I love 3.5, my nostalgic heart wants to go back to Cyclopedia D&D every now and then because thats what I grew up doing.

I would have said 2e, but after a while the nonsensical rulings really bogged me down. I guess I never got disillusioned on D&D RC...

The results of this poll are precisely what I expected them to be on ENWORLD. The same poll on Dragonsfoot would be entirely different ;)

The game that best captures "D&D" for me is the game I'm currently playing D&D with: 3.5.

If I was currently playing only 2nd edition, I'd answer that. Capturing "D&D" is all about how I get together with my friends and play, not the specific mechanics.

1st Edition AD&D after the release of Unearthed Arcana, or 3.0 rules. 2nd Edition killed the game for me, and I was a little disgusted with how WotC handled the release of 3.5.

any. Although I have to admit I have not played anything prior to AD&D 1e (I haven't play 1e extensively, of course).

All the nomenclature about what is and is not D&D is kinda silly to me. I think it really depends on having a good DM and players who sync well with each other.

I don't know the older versions of D&D. But for me, the differences between D&D3.5 and AD&D2e are negligible compared to their similarities, especially if I include other games in the comparison. So I'd probably go with the "all of the above".
