What happens if we don't like it?

iiinteresting thread necromancy. I have not seen many of those other posters in a very long time (look at their registration dates! Such long-time posters!)

So many of my friends IRL and online have "converted" after being stubbornly against 4e for many months when it was published.

  • About half the groups I know around my area (Orange County/Southern California) converted right away.
  • There are still some players that have real issues with the more obviously "gamist" and cinematic aspects of the game but play anyways.
  • Now that a year has passed I do not hear any 4E player claiming that 4E is better in all aspects to the previous edition. They just like it better than 3E but miss things of 3E. (Surprisingly the Star Wars SAGA edition seems to be the only d20 system variant that people like universally compared to its predecessors)
  • On the flip-side I have never heard anyone who has GMed both editions prefer Gming 3E.
  • Pathfinder rules are nearly impossible to find around here. I've only seen 1 core rulebook for sale. Other Pathfinder/Paizo products are not that rare, just PF. I am the only person in the 7 groups (approx. 37 people) I know that owns a PF rulebook. Most of the 3ed players are interested in the rules and have liked what they see on the Pathfinder wikis.

I was so going to ignore this thread and it's shambling gate, until someone mentioned the DI.

Of alllll the aspects of 4e announced, that one I hated most. Stupid, subscribing to a tabletop RPG why?

And now I am a loyal subscriber and fan. I don't know what happened, but somewhere between the free trial for the character builder and the excellent Dragon articles for PC's, I was converted and saw the wisdom of a living system.

Kind of odd, really. I think 3.5 could have benefitted from this, since my 3.5 days were allways subtitled with "no dragon content allowed!". Now it is more along the lines of "no broken content allowed!".

Anyways, I hate this thread.

My opinion hasnt changed. Pretty much everything that they have done in 4e is pretty much the opposite of the way I would have done it.

But I DM it. One thing that they really nailed was how to make the game easier on the DM. As in less than 10% the effort for better adventures.

But to answer the OP: TURN UNDEAD YOU FOUL THREAD ZOMBIE!!!.....wait, I mean, as a product, they are still a bit off the mark, and I am pretty close to the end of what I am going to buy. For 3e there were two of us who bought all the products, and nearly everyone else the core 3. For 4e, only 1 buys all, one buys some, and not even everyone bought the PHB1.

In my 7-man group, I was previously the only one buying anything other than the PHB - now everyone but one has a DDI sub, and most have bought at least 2-5 books.

Wha? You woke me up from the weirdest dream. I dreamed 4E was already out. Oh, and the election happened and it wasn't Hillary OR Rudy, it was some guy with a funny name. Now shut up and let me go back to sleep.

Did anyone buy the DI?

I was skeptical of the DI and didn't think of it being anything I'd ever be interested in. I didn't realize how integral it is for our group now.

Not only do we all use the Character Builder to whip out characters, Adventure Tools has (mostly) replaced me using the Monster Manual when I'm running games.

It also made me comfortable considering all books "core". Back in 3.x days, I had a rule that only books that someone in the group owned and that I had read cover-to-cover were allowable material. Now my rule is anything that the players can whip up in the Character Builder is fair game.

I didn't realize how spoiled us 4e guys are by the Character Builder until I sat down to make a Pathfinder character and spent three hours flipping back-and-forth through the book figuring everything out (and now as I type this suddenly realize I'm supposed to have more hp and/or skill points!).

Character Builder and Adventure Tools are, hands-down, the most useful tabletop RPG products I've ever seen.

No one in my play group has DI, and we have not missed it at all. Making up characters with the books we have takes some time, for sure, but when the character is done, I feel we know it well. If I whipped one up in a few minutes, would I know what the character is? I've seen a lot of people make up a lot of characters for my PBEMs on a huge variety of characer generators and then have no idea how to play them or what their characters could do.

I'm willing to admit DI could be a good tool, but I remain unconvinced it is necessary to play 4E.

Necessary? Absolutely not. I played in three different campaigns without it and didn't feel the lack. Because most of the characters I played didn't have supporting books that I didn't own.

Useful? Very. I'm now playing a Warlord (one of the weakest classes in the PH 1) and have found the character builder to be amazingly useful in selecting cool abilities that fit my character and are very effective with my group's playstyle. This is especially nice since about 1/2 of my powers come from books that I don't own or have access to, but are generally perfect for what I want to do.
Better, with the full ability descriptions and spiffy printed cards, I can actually read over what I've got and understand it before I sit down to play.

My only complaint about the character builder is that custom material (from added house rules) can't be selected from any of the character lists. Which is really going to tank its usefulness when we hit Paragon and I take a houserule Paragon Path.
