What happens if you miss your flight?

I missed a flight a few years ago when I was on vacation visiting friends. Late nights + early flights = tragedy. Well, not tragedy, actually - they just put me on another flight a couple hours later at no charge.

Ditto. If you're at the airport, out of breath, "I missed my flight!" They just book you on the next one, and assume sitting around waiting costs you enough as is.

If you call the night before, "I don't think I'll make my flight" that's when they hit you with rebooking fees.

That's been my experience.

Full price airline will probably just put you on a later flight.

Budget airlines will make you buy a whole new ticket. I know this because this happened to a firend of main last week. Cost him £170 for being a few minutes late. :(

I'm just curious. If I had a plane ticket for the trip home at the end of my vacation, and for whatever reason I missed my flight, how could I get home? Would it cost money, or would the airline just put me on the next flight? How does it work?

Depends what airline you're with. United Airlines botched the job getting me home from Mexico City, and I ended up missing the flight. They were actually fairly rude, and uncooperative about it. I did eventually get home.

In any case, I think that if you miss it because of your own fault, you might be out of luck, but if they cause you to miss it, like if your connector is late or something, then they'll find you another flight, and the cost is covered by the ticket you already purchased. It can suck sitting around an airport for six hours waiting for the next flight, when you're going home, and just want your own bed..:(

I once called about taking a later flight, but decided not to due to the "change" fee.

I got to the airport, and they said I wasn't on the first flight! The gate attendant checked, and said I had changed to the later flight. When I pointed out that I never paid for the change, she put me back on the first flight.

I did miss a flight once (April of 1988), and they just put on the next flight. Luckily, I was flying United into Chicago, so there was a next flight. Otherwise, I'd have been SOL.

We missed a weekday afternoon flight last week on Southwest airlines. We arrived at check-in 5 minutes before it was due to leave the gate, and there was no way we've ever clear security and get to the gate in that time. I'd never missed a flight before. :(

They booked us on the next available seats for a $30/person charge. Unfortunately departure was for 24 hours later, which was very painful as it was supposed to be a 4 day trip. We showed very early the next morning to try for standby seats, and were ready to wait around for 9 hours if it didn't pan out. We were the only two standby people to get onto the plane, and it was FULL.

It worked out for us, but it was very nervewracking. I don't recommend it.
