What Happens When You Go Lich?

First Post
I was wonderign what happens when a character goes through the ritual an becomes a lich.

What happens to is ECL does he essentially gain free levels?

Does he remove character levels to make up for the ECL of a lich?

Once you go Lich, you never go back. :D

Someone had to say it, so might as well get it out of the way. When a charcter goes lich you apply the Lich Template to them. The template is ecl +3 (I think). I would do this two ways. Either break down the bonuses the Lich gets over the next 3 levels (so basically he's just getting the lich bonuses and not anything else for those 3 levels.). Or I'd just allow him to be a lich, but he needs a heck of a lot of XP for that next level. Basically he would need to gain 3 levels in nothing to allow for the ecl to be added.

I'll just clear this part of the dusscussion up right away, assume the player is keeping the character regardless of alignments.

Thank you for the posts so far, keep them comming.

Well, what level is the person undergoing lich-ification? I belive that an 11th level caster has to sell all of his equipment to make the phylactery becaue of the extreme cost, right? (Don't have my MM and DMG with me.)

I'd just keep his XP and ECL the same as before, and treat lichood as a very expensive and powerful item.

The lich templates adds 2 equivalent character level.

By the book, the lich becomes an NPC. Therefore, there ain't no rules about level progression (relative to the other players).

Personnaly, I would require the character to get enough XP to be a 14th level wizard (you have to be a 12th level wizard to do the ritual) but keeping him 12th level. In other words, when he has enough XP to become a 13th level character, nothing happens. When he get enough XP to be a 14th level character, nothing happen until he does the ritual. After that, he becomes a 14th level character; 2 equivalent character level of lich template and 12 level of wizard. Afterwards, he would gain XP normaly as a 14th level character. When reaching the XP cap to be a 15th level character, he would become a 13th level wizard.

Doing it the other way around is WAY too unbalancing (I speak from experience !!!) and SHOULD NOT BE DONE !!!

Even the 2 ECL of the lich template are not enough to compensate for the tremendously huge benefits the lich gains.

I do NOT think it's a good idea at all to allow PC to become a lich, or a vampire for that matter UNLESS the character is the only one PC in the "group". It gets unimaginably boring for the rest of the party.

Last word: do not do that !!!

I'll second this version of how things work for Liches-to-be.

It takes a really long time to get the next level after becoming a Lich.

My character has been seperate from the rest of the party for the last while i'm not the one going lich. Currently the rest of the party has been giving him money to do this, plus he has eben saving for awhile. He is I think level 12 or 13. Not sure since I have been seperate from the rest of the party.

Our party consists of a Neutral Revenant/Barbarian /Fighter/Beserker
Neutral Grey Elf Necromancer (Lichy)
Lawful Good Paladin
Lawful Good Half Celestial Cleric/Fighter
This is not including my character

Not really, In our game we seem to level once every 2-3 weeks, and since he is ore then likely gonna have his equipment levelign will not be a problem for him. It scares me alittle.

Hey Valicor.

Does the Paladin and the C/F know what this character is going to do?

I don't think a Paladin would allow this... at least he wouldn't associate with the character after he found out about it.
