What happens when you lose a limb?

My thief has recently lost his primary arm, almost at the shoulder.

The party cleric doen't have a Regeneration spell yet, and the group is miles from civilization.

What game effects would occur to him?

If this is detailed in any game book, can you reference it so I can show the players, we are all interested.

At the time, I just mentioned it would have some negative effects and the game session ended.

Thanks,

Rules for damaged body parts are in the DMG page 27 IIRC... but not for missing limbs. I'd go with doubling the penalty for a damaged arm, lower Con by 4 and ... don't use the character till he gets back or gets a nice seat and a beggarcup in the slum at a crossing.

So a -4 to Constitution for the limb loss.

Is this the damage I should have delivered or do you add that on top of the Constitution loss?

Also, -4's for all skills with hands and arms, and attack rolls. Obviously no two-handed weapons... or two-weapon fighting.

So what if you have the Two-weapon fighting feat? I suppose your off-hand is always your off-hand... at least until you train a while with it. How long does it take to get used to doing things with your off-hand? A year? Longer?

I would think that this has to have come up before. How many limbs are lost due to a great melee weapon blow. HACK! Sorry you lost your leg buck-o!

Anyhow, if anyone has some further insights, let me know here; I'll be watching...

Yeah, but this would be houseruling. Sorry I didn't mention that earlier.

I would add that then.

TWF should work since you're ambidextrous be default if you have that feat.

If you don't have the feat? half a year at max, guessed from realism.

Sorry, nothing in Core books (or Kalamar stuff). Just some quint fighter rules or something weird. Torn Asunder- critical hits... that book might have something.

Constitution Penalty

If I were houseruling, I would be more tempted to go for no constitution penalty at all, but -2 would be fine I guess. Realistically speaking, if every person missing a limb had the equivalent of a -4 penalty to constitution for every limb they lost, there would be a *LOT* fewer people in the world, particularily veterans.

And how would a person with no legs win in the Para-Olympics with a constitution penalty of -8... or even -4?

How did you lose a limb, anyway? I have never seen any rules for it.
Me neither... but in my game your lucky if all you lose is an arm.

Axes hurt.

The scythe blade trap that I installed for my precious thief got him... I didn't even allow a save! But that's what you get when you put your arm in a hole and press a button.

I'd say that you would need to gain a level of experience to avoid any off-hand penalties. By that time the character has adjusted to the situation. I had a PC lose a hand in a game and that is pretty much what I did. It did open up some interesting role-playing opportunities though. The whole arm is more of a pain to work around. Especially for a rogue...
