What happens when you roll. . . a zero?

I am a player in Wulf's excellent Slavelords of Cydonia PbP.. For a spot check in a snake filled temple, my character (Teddy) got a zero. That's right, a natural one minus his wisdom penalty equals zero. What, exactly, does Teddy see?

I know 3rd edition officially does away with the one as a critical fumble rule, but doesn't a zero deserve something special?

Anyone still use the "one as a fumble" mechanic?

I use the one as a fumble mechanic but not all the time. In that case I'd say your character saw the snake but recognized them as the harmless variety.

You fail to notice the viper sneeking up your pants.

Did I mention this was an Awakened 5th level Rogue Viper?

With Wounding Jaw +5 of Flaming, Shocking, Thundering, Unholy, & Sharpness.

Oh, he's got a 35 Strenght too.

Let roll to see if he Crits.

Come to think of it, this thread may be a bad idea. Don't look, Wulf!

Ninja.

But seriously, have you ever had one of those days when you drive the 30 minutes home from work, and when you get there, you realize you can't actually remember anything along the way? That's what you see when you get a zero.

Teddy turns his head, just in time to see a twig poke him in the eye. -10 to all spot checks for the next 2 days due to a scratched cornea.

I was just about to say, "Your eyes fell out."

If I roll poorly on a skill check I usually describe my character as being momentarily distracted or totally oblivious to what was going on. If it's a Spot check sometimes I'll just rub my eye and say, "Ow! I got something in my eye." :D

"Which looks better: one?"

" . . . or two?"
