An end to characters based on managing per-day resources.

Non-spellcasting characters who are interesting to play.

Warlocks as a fully-developed core class.

Fewer magic items, particularly of the generic bonus type.

Traps designed to be more interesting than "skill check, skill check, saving throw, damage".

Less save-or-lose.

Everything. Except maybe action points, but that's hardly a deal breaker, and who knows, maybe they'll surprise me.

Same reason I buy heaps of rules sets (even if I never plan to use them) must have the new 'shiny'! I am just always interested in more takes on my favourite game, there is something in every rule set I end up using. But a WHOLE new edition is just exciting....

Mainly:

*Lower prep times

*Talent trees

*Multi classing made worthwhile for casters

*Fighters who have interestig choices

*Old stuff kept for nostalgia being thrown out

*Less reliance on alignment

*Mages that don't need to use cross bows

That's the big ones. There are probably something I don't remember right now ;)

Stick of Dynamite ---INSERT---> Vancian Magic

Light Fuse

Actually, what has me most excited is the experience. This will be my first new version of D&D. 3E was my introduction to D&D, so as I read the PHB, I was learning D&D in general without paying much attention to the version. With 4E it will be different. I now have D&D experience, so I'll be able to approach 4E from a 'what's new?' perspective rather than a 'what's all this?' perspective. I know a lot of people around here don't agree with this, but I think newness is fun.

It will still be cool to see Mr. Vance go, though.

For me,
1. Removal of the Christmas Tree Syndrome
2. Balance at higher levels between spellcasters and non-spellcasters
3. Action Points are core
4. At least some undead will be critable (already a houserule in my 3.x game)
5. The possibility that class structure may work more like d20 Modern or Star Wars:SAGA
6. Wizard implements

Unfortunately, I still have to wait and see how 1,2,5, and 6 above are implemented. Beyond the six things above, I have actually been disappointed by most everyting else that has been revelaed to date. Yet, there is still time for WOTC to win me over.

The concept of a Leader role.

Fighter self heals.

Multiclassing that doesn't gimp melee/caster hybrids.

At will spells/effects.

Saves working like AC.

Faster combat options.

More development on the Druid/Monk/Bard classes to make the work.

Those, plus it seems like it will be more "handy" - no referring to books and tables every time a character so much as sneezes. I hope.

At will, per encounter and per day resources for all classes.

Better parity between all types of characters of the same level, whether pure martial, pure spellcaster, or multiclassed.

Racial abilities that are staggered across or improve with levels.
