What History Have You Witnessed

I "did" the Flood of '93. Was right smack in the middle of it. I find it a real pity that folks don't seem to know what I'm talking about when I mention it. Amost disconcerting. Cripes, it was a flood that started in early May and didn't peak until August. Biggun. Watched my ex-wife's childhood home wash away. A two story house on twenty foot stilts. And I was there when the levee "broke" in the town I lived in. (I say "" because it wasn't the classic image.)

Almost really belongs in the "Life changing moments" thread I guess...

I was in the Papal audience something within a month of the Solidarity party winning the elections in Poland in 1989.

Papal audiences are pretty amazing all the time, but when he got up to speak in Polish. Wow. All the flags came out and you felt that joy and you just knew that was it, it was a new world.

It's not much, but it was pretty powerful.

Otherwise the history I see is pretty slow and will mostly be important later. I'm fairly certain that mine will be one of the last generations to live in the area I live in its current form. The water and cash are pretty inevitably running out. Future ghost towns all around.

I was in Texas and voted in the first election since Reconstruction in which both legislative houses went Republican. It's history writ in big trends, but that doesn't mean you can't feel it.
