Hmm...which edition.

Normally don't houserule...but if I decide to in 5e...

Instead of an archtype, fighters can double their proficiency bonus if they want, and sacrifice proficieny bonus points to do extra damage (so, -1 Prof pt in an attack to hit, to gain +1 dmg). Can be simpler and easier to do than keeping track of all the battlemaster variable rolls and such.

Handwave long travelling periods where nothing happens. Instead of going through it, it just happens and we go on to the next event.

so each level is double what it is now or you give half xp?
I used the XP table from the Into the Unknown supplement which increases the amount.

It gives me an excuse to look for ways to hand out XP. We've played about 35 sessions and the group is 5th level. Individuals have between 14,000-19,000 by my best guess. There were some late-comers to the group that started at a lower level and received a 50% xp bonus. We're about to take a break from the campaign (at my request) and start a new DM.

Handing out xp is something I plan to refine after some player feedback, but the xp table has worked well for me so far.

Nope. Melee weapons use strength, ranged weapons use dexterity.
As per rules in 5e, weapons with finess property can use dex or str. Ranged use dex, and thrown is same as melee (str, or dex if finess).

So you are saying you use str for crossbows and the like? Weird.
