No, this is NOT an edition wars thread.
I'm a designer. I like to create things. Sometimes I like to tinker with rules, other times I like to create a new setting or add to an existing one. I also don't like sticking strictly with one thing too long, but I often enjoy coming back to the familiar to do something new with it.
Where am I going with this? Not really sure, to be honest. Lately I've been kicking around some ideas of things I'd like to do on my own, without having to go out and find a publisher for them. For example, there's a historical setting that I'd like to do using the Castles and Crusades rules. There's an adventure that would work well with 3.5/Pathfinder. I still have the Galovinius campaign setting, which I never properly finished.
In short, I've been thinking once again about going into self publishing. So what's holding me back? Well for one thing, I know from experience that the business end of it is a lot of work. Now, thanks to print on demand publishing, getting products to print isn't the major undertaking that it once was (and in fact, is what ultimately sank my first company, Dark Portal Games), and the PDF market is quite a bit larger, that's a potential avenue for me to explore. But then there's also the issue of art, and editing. I mean if I end up writing a whole bunch of stuff myself, the absolute worst person to be doing the editing would be me as I always know what it is I'm trying to say, but will another reader's take on something be the same as mine?
I'm still kicking around the idea and I haven't decided one way or the other. If I did create this new company, chances are pretty good that the releases wouldn't be steady, as I have so many other commitments in my life, such as finishing up my college degree, possibly going into grad school. I also wouldn't necessarily be looking to make a great deal of money off of these projects either. I'd be most concerned with covering my costs, but otherwise charging a fair value for things.
So what's the point of this thread? Just a bit of rambling, to be honest. Part of me is wondering if anyone would be interested in what I might have to offer, but since you really don't know what I might have to offer based on my post here, that doesn't really provide you with enough information to answer that question. I don't suffer from the delusion that my name alone carries enough weight to inspire interest - in other words, I'm no Monte Cook, but I've done a few things.
I don't know, thoughts and feedback of any kind would be appreciated.
