What inspires you to play?

Be it D&D, d20 Modern, White Wolf, or Rolemaster, all of us play (or want to play) some sort of roleplaying game. But why?

What inspires you to play, sit down (or stand up, or lay down, or do handstands) at the gaming table (or gaming room, or basement, or in a secret glen in the Secret Forest of Most Secretive Secrets) and spend the day pretending to be a hero (or a villain, if that's your preference), slaying orcs, rescuing distressed mistresses, and saving the world time after time?

For me, as the DM, it's that once-in-a-blue-moon moment when I look around the gaming table to see every single player grinning like a maniac, and I feel like giggling with glee.

That is my inspiration to play.

What's yours?

I need someplace to hide out from all the supermodels that are stalking me.

They'll never think to look for me in the game room!

:D

That's for sure!

Back on topic for a moment - my Brother is the main reason I play. He loves to play and brings a lot of energy and fun to the table. Players like him make it worth while.

It feeds my Ego and exercises my imagination.

I love it that I have several players who will not take a job if they have to work on sundays since that is gaming day. I love it when I know they are talking about my game when I am not around.

I love creating a world and evoking emotions from my players. I love having something to think about when I have nothing to do like sitting in traffic or waiting in line.

But that's just me.

Oh I also like it that other people like what I run. Just that I am giving someone something they like.

Why I play...I like to let my mind wander and hang out with friends and do amazing things (even if it is in our minds)...oh and to likk stuff :D

Why I publish, I have good ideas and I like to share them, now that feeds the ego:p , people asking my opinion on something, or on those rare occasions someone wants an autograph etc.... it makes it all worthwhile.

As DM it gives me a chance to dry run my own plans for world domination. They say you should always get a bunch of idiots (the players) to look at your plans to spot the obvious holes in it.

Cool stuff. Running a D&D campaign allows me to imagine a world that is stuffed to the gills with cool stuff. Swords. Dinosaurs. Flintlock pistols. All that goodness.

I play D&D to indulge my need for cool stuff. Because working in software development, not so cool. Not compared to swords. Or dinosaurs.
