Something I have thought about is to have half of each successful hit for damage be actual physical injury and half be non-physical, like the stuff described in the books. So that non-physical part can be easily recovered with rest or hit dice use or whatever else non-magical is available. But the physical part can only be recovered so much from bandaging and wound cleaning and such, without use of actual magic to speed it up.
