What is an appropriate DC?

[hypothetical] Say you have two buildings, and connecting them is a clothesline, or a rope, or a metal chain link, or something similar. Grabbing this rope is not a problem, but you want to hang on to the rope while you dangle over a bottomless chasm while someone on the other side (or a gear) pulls you across.

What is an appropriate Strength DC to be able to keep ahold of this rope, and how often should a check be made?

Just hanging onto a rope doesn't seem like the sort of thing that would require a STR check. If you're going to require one, I'd make it very easy, like DC 3, or DC 5 at the most.

I'd say DC 5 Str check with swim modifiers applied for encumberance. I would not allow taking 10 because if they fail, they fall.

To me this seems most like the Climb skill. Somewhere in range of DC 0 to 5, check each round, with normal armor check/encumbrance penalty.
