The Realms timeline will advance in 'spurts'. In the 3E FRCS, it is midsummer of 1372 and the book outlines events that have occured since late 1370.
New products will update the timeline as required - but don't expect anything in the near future and basically, as I recall, the time line will not advance for the next three real years.
That said, the Realms novels generally are accepted as canon by most of the rank and file (most, not all), so the Return of the Archmage series (the return of the City of Shade) will probably playout events (and advance the timeline) for events pertaining to that. There are other novels in the offing.
