A world of mystery. Every corner hasn't been explored and mapped out, there are no uber-npcs wandering about, travel between civilized centers is fraught with danger, but might lead you to great allies as well as great enemies. There are no grand empires spanning the continent(s), but kingdoms and small nations that the PCs can influence, even a lower mid-levels. A world where the PCs are not reacting to things, but able to go out and make their own mark. A world where the PCs can become the best of the best, and everyone will know it.

I couldn't find one like that (granted I didn't look too hard), so I wrote one! :)

That sounds more like a description of what your ideal campaign setting isn't (namely: Forgotten Realms) but says very little about what it is.

The detail of JRR Tolkein...

The grit of Glen Cook...

The scope of Frank Herbert...

The uncertainty of real life.
That's basically what I'm shooting for. If I ever get so far as to publish novels in my setting (which is the goal, really), ENWorld will be the first to know. Well, actually the editors, publishers, agents, etc. will know first, but THAT'S BESIDE THE POINT!!! :D

The ideal setting for me would contain paradox in the views of most.

That is it would be gritty, with lots of magic.
It would be realistic and off the wall.
It has uber NPCs, But they hardly matter.
It would be conan and Lankhmar mixed with the sappy unicorn and wizard posters you remember from the 80's...
It would be peter pan and the pressed fairy book
Robin hood and Elric
Elements of Steampunk and Hightech
It would be zeppilins take on LotR and Baas's take on the hobbit
The Hobbit (book)
The last unicorn (book)
Don Bluth's Dragonslair
D&D cartoon's locations and scenery
The end of Time bandits
The pirates of darkwater
No one would be able to agree on what it was, High fantasy? Swords and Sorcery? Low Fantasy? Heroic Fantasy? Lofty Fantasy? Gritty Fantasy?

Answer: All of the above. Put it all in a burrito, eat.

Basicly everything I have done to the Forgotten Realms...
Arg... So hard to convey... I need to make a web page with art...
